At the end of June, we will be saying farewell to our Assistant Coordinator, Wendy.

After several years with Crediton Foodbank, Wendy has decided that the time is right for a new chapter. She will be focusing on expanding her private Spanish tuition work and exploring some exciting new opportunities.

Wendy has been a huge part of the Foodbank team, bringing compassion, dedication, and a genuine commitment to supporting people in our community. She has built wonderful relationships with our volunteers, trustees, and clients, and her contribution over the years has made a real difference.

In particular, Wendy has loved being involved with our Friday Café, which has become an important source of friendship, support, and connection for many people in Crediton.

We would like to thank Wendy for everything she has done and wish her every success and happiness in her future adventures. We know she will be greatly missed.

As we move through this period of transition, there may be some operational changes behind the scenes while we review how best to move forward. For now, all Foodbank services continue to operate as normal. We ask for your patience and understanding, and we will keep our clients, volunteers, and supporters updated if there are any changes that may affect them.

Please join us in thanking Wendy and wishing her all the very best for the future. 💚

Do you help look after a partner, parent, family member or friend who couldn’t manage without your support?

Many unpaid carers don’t think of themselves as “carers” at all, but caring for someone can be rewarding, challenging, and sometimes exhausting.

That’s why we’re sharing this information from Devon Carers as part of Carers Week. They provide free support, advice, information, and opportunities to connect with other carers who understand what you’re going through.

If you’re an unpaid carer, or know someone who is, take a look at the details below. There are opportunities to meet the Devon Carers team right here in Crediton next week, including at Tesco and Crediton Library.

Please share this with anyone who might benefit 💛

👋Join us for 8th-14th June!👋

The theme is 'Building Carer Friendly Communities' and we will be visiting communities across Devon to raise awareness and enable unpaid carers to meet up with each other.

On Tuesday 9th June, we will be visiting venues in and around Crediton and if you can't visit us there, why not pop along to Exeter?

Chat with us about any questions you have about being an unpaid carer, our free services and how we can support you.

Visit us at our awareness stands:
- Active Crediton - Lords Meadow: 9.30am-2.30pm
- Tesco Superstore: 9.30am-3.30pm
or
- NHS Nightingale Hospital, Exeter: 10am-3pm

Or if you would like to meet up with other unpaid carers over a cuppa, share experiences, and build supportive networks with those in your area at our Carer Connection event:
- Crediton Library: 2pm-3.30pm

Not able to attend? For more information about our free services for adult unpaid carers supporting someone 18yrs plus who wouldn't cope without your help who is living in the Devon County Council area, visit:

BUSTED:

One of the most damaging myths about foodbanks is that people are “taking advantage” of the system.

The truth is that the vast majority of people who come to us are facing genuine hardship and never expected to need this kind of support.

People access the foodbank for many reasons:
• Job loss
• Illness
• Rising living costs
• Delayed benefits
• Relationship breakdowns
• Unexpected emergencies

At Crediton Foodbank and Support Hub, we will always help someone in crisis. Longer-term support is reviewed carefully to make sure help is fair, appropriate, and reaching those who truly need it.

Asking for help is not easy. Most people come to us because they have run out of options, not because they are trying to “get something for free”.

💚 Volunteers’ Week – A Thank You to Every Volunteer 💚

As Volunteers’ Week comes to an end, we’d like to say a huge thank you to every single person who gives their time to Crediton Foodbank.

This week we’ve shared the stories of just a handful of our volunteers, those who kindly agreed to be featured. Behind those posts are many more people who quietly give their time, energy and compassion throughout the year.

The support we provide to local people is only possible because so many people are willing to give their time to help others. us behind the scenes as Trustees, drivers, organisers and problem-solvers.

Every role matters.

What makes our volunteer team so special isn’t just the work they do. It’s the kindness they show, the friendships they build, the encouragement they offer and the sense of community they create.

To everyone who volunteers now, has volunteered in the past, or has helped us in any way along the journey, thank you. You are a huge part of what makes Crediton Foodbank the welcoming, supportive and caring organisation it is today. 💚

Happy Volunteers’ Week, and thank you for everything you do.

💚 It’s Volunteers’ Week! 💚

Throughout this week, we’d like to introduce you to some of the wonderful people who help make Crediton Foodbank possible.

The volunteers featured in these posts are those who kindly agreed to have their photo and story shared. They represent just a few of the many amazing volunteers who give their time, energy and compassion to support our community. We’re grateful to every single one of them. 💚

Today we’d like to say thank you to Phil.

Phil is one of the volunteers who helps keep things running smoothly behind the scenes. On Fridays, he helps pack food parcels, and on Mondays, he collects the donations from Tesco, making sure they get safely back to the Foodbank and ready to support local people.

After retiring, Phil wanted to keep busy while also helping those who are less fortunate. We’re very grateful that he chose to spend some of that time supporting Crediton Foodbank.

Volunteers like Phil play a vital role in ensuring donations are collected, sorted and turned into practical support for people facing difficult times.

And because we’ve been asking everyone the important question this week… 🍨

Phil has broken the mould slightly because he doesn’t actually like ice cream!

Instead, his favourite treat is a generous helping of apple pie and custard. We think that’s an acceptable substitute. 😄

Thank you, Phil, for your time, commitment and willingness to help others in our community. 👏

Today we’d like to say thank you to Mel Gard.

Mel is one of our Trustees and leads the communications and marketing portfolio for Crediton Foodbank. As the owner of a digital marketing agency, she brings a wealth of professional experience to the role, helping the Foodbank communicate more effectively with donors, supporters, volunteers and people who may need our help.

From managing our social media and website to designing leaflets, organising event materials, writing content and helping share the Foodbank’s message with the wider community, there’s usually a communications project somewhere on her to-do list!

Mel started volunteering after moving to Crediton from South Africa. Looking for a meaningful way to meet people and become part of the local community, she joined the Foodbank and found an opportunity to use her skills to support a cause that makes a real difference to local people.

Whether it’s promoting a fundraising event, updating the website, helping tackle misconceptions about Foodbanks, or encouraging donations when stocks are running low, Mel helps make sure the community knows what we’re doing and how they can get involved.

And because we’ve been asking everyone the important question this week… 🍦

Mel’s favourite ice cream is Italian gelato. She’s not too worried about the flavour, although pistachio and dark chocolate with berries are always strong contenders!

We’re grateful to Mel for all the time, creativity and expertise she brings to Crediton Foodbank. 👏

MYTH BUSTED ❌

Crediton Foodbank is not run by, or affiliated with, Crediton Congregational Church.

It’s easy to see why people think this. Our Foodbank and Support Hub is based at The Manse, next to Crediton Congregational Church, and many years ago the Foodbank was started by members of the church.

Today, however, Crediton Foodbank is an independent charity with its own trustees, governance, policies and funding.

We’re incredibly grateful to Crediton Congregational Church for providing our premises at an affordable rent and for the many church members who generously volunteer their time and support our work. Their contribution helps us make a real difference in our community.

Our support is available to everyone who needs it, regardless of faith, beliefs, background, or circumstances.

At Crediton Foodbank, our focus is simple: helping local people through difficult times and connecting them with the support they need. 💚
