What if a student project could help protect food security for entire communities? 🧑‍🤝‍🧑

Three fifth-year Cambridge veterinary students have won the first Global Veterinary Challenge Award, in partnership with British Veterinary Association - BVA, with a proposal to tackle Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) in Uganda, a devastating disease affecting goats and sheep.

Working alongside local partners, their project aims to build herd immunity through vaccination, education and training, helping improve animal welfare and support smallholder farmers.

The best part? This idea won't stay on paper. WVS will now work with the students and local organisations to bring the project to life.

Building the next generation of veterinary professionals 🎓✨

The Advanced Vet Assistant Skills Development Programme is an intensive two-week course, which ran from 3–28 August 2026, guided participants through fundamental skills of being a veterinary assistant including patient care, compassionate handling, wound management, anaesthesia monitoring and preparation of patients for surgery.

Participants were then given supervised time to practice their new skills while helping to carry out sterilisation surgeries.

A huge thank you to Hannah Puddy and Joshua Vaz from the WVS Taskforce, who have been leading the programme. The second group of participants is currently undergoing training 💙

We didn't set out to publish a research paper. We set out to stop rabies.

But by documenting the first structured mass dog vaccination campaign delivered in a refugee settlement, we've generated evidence that could help shape future humanitarian health responses.

Our latest research demonstrates that effective rabies control is achievable, even in challenging and resource-limited settings.

At WVS and Mission Rabies, the research comes from the work itself. By delivering programmes, measuring impact and sharing what we learn, we're helping build the evidence needed to end rabies for good.

Join our partners at the Maun Animal Welfare Society (MAWS) in 2027 and help improve the lives of dogs and cats in one of Africa's most unique volunteer destinations.

Working alongside a passionate local team, you'll support animal welfare initiatives, population management programmes and vital veterinary care for animals that might otherwise go without treatment.
