A little mystery in the garden 🌿

This is thought to be Cornus kousa ‘Milky Way’… but we’re not completely convinced 🤔 If any plant experts or keen-eyed gardeners recognise it, we’d love to know!

What makes it so special? The bracts emerge a deep crimson red before gradually fading to a bright, crisp white - a transformation that’s not commonly seen 🌸

After a dry spring left us flowerless last year, this season’s rain has worked wonders and it’s looking absolutely stunning. It’s quickly become a real talking point as we’ve not seen another quite like it 💚

“The whole place has helped my recovery immensely and helped reduce my stress levels” 💚

My name is Martin. I’d always lived a busy, physically active life - running an international firework display company and managing a small farm with my wife. But in a split second, everything changed when an accident left me with a serious spinal injury.

When I arrived at the National Spinal Injuries Centre, I discovered Horatio’s Garden - and from the moment I did, I was blown away. It felt like a living room away from home; somewhere I could meet my wife, spend time with friends, and even keep working. I’ve taken calls in the greenhouse, found space to think, and moments of calm away from the ward.

Socially, it’s been a real sanctuary too - a place to connect with others going through similar experiences and even form new friendships. It’s made a huge difference during a challenging time 🌿

“When you’re in hospital for such a long time, it’s so important to have somewhere to go. I know it would’ve made such a difference for me - and I see it making a difference for so many people every time I’m there volunteering.” 💚

By joining one of our volunteer teams, you can help create those moments for people going through life-changing injuries. Whether you’re spending time with people with spinal injuries and their families in the garden, supporting fundraising, or getting involved with gardening, every contribution matters 🌿

“Being able to chat to someone with a similar experience can make a real difference.” 💚

Meet Des, one of our wonderful volunteers at Horatio’s Garden Midlands. After sustaining a spinal injury over 40 years ago, Des later returned to the centre and experienced first-hand the positive impact the garden can have during rehabilitation.

When it was time to leave, he was asked if he’d like to volunteer - and four and a half years later, he’s still there today.

“Spending time with people is my favourite part of being a volunteer. I’m sociable and chatty by nature, so meeting staff, visitors and patients is incredibly rewarding.”

You could make a real difference too. Find out more about volunteering via the link below✨

“We should all have a green space where we can feel like ourselves and take time out from the world.”

My name is Deb. Before I arrived at the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville, I had spent three months confined to a hospital bed. I missed the outdoors more than anything - the fresh air, the changing skies, even the feeling of rain on my face.

Finding Horatio’s Garden changed that.

Even in winter, it gave me a place to come outside, to notice the textures of leaves and the rhythm of the seasons - a moment away from the noise and intensity of the ward. It became somewhere I could reconnect with myself, and with the people I love 💚

I’ve shared time there with family and friends and found joy again through creative workshops - discovering new ways of doing things, and learning to enjoy the moment as it is.

The garden is where I feel most at home in the hospital. It’s a place of calm, of connection, and of possibility 🌱

“I just love being in and around the peaceful setting and talking to people” 🌿

It’s Volunteers’ Week, and we’re celebrating the incredible people who help make our gardens so special 💚

Meet John, a wonderful volunteer at Horatio’s Garden Sheffield & East - sharing his time, warmth and experience to support others as they navigate life-changing spinal injuries.

“I have been a wheelchair user for over 40 years following a spinal injury in 1984. I decided to volunteer at Horatio’s Garden Sheffield & East as I am a regular visitor to the unit, and I was blown away at the opening in May. I love talking to newly injured people, as well as their families and friends, to offer support and advice.”

John is just one example of our incredible team, and we are so thankful to him - and to all our volunteers - for everything they do 🌱
