Today we remember Lance Corporal Joe Spencer, 24, of the 3rd Battalion The Ri**es, from Hampshire, who died on the 1st November 2016 during a sniper training exercise in the Scottish Highlands when his r***e discharged unexpectedly.

Today we remember Corporal Ian Plank, who was killed by hostile fire during a coalition operation in Iraq on 31st October 2003. The 31-year-old, who served with the Special Boat Squadron, was killed in a battle between British and American special forces and supporters of Saddam Hussein, aided by foreign fighters.

Today we remember Lieutenant Edward Drummond-Baxter and Lance Corporal Siddhanta Kunwar from 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Ri**es who were shot and killed by a man wearing Afghan Police uniform at a checkpoint in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province on Tuesday 30th October 2012.

Today we remember Sapper William Blanchard from 101 (City of London) Engineer Regiment (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), serving with the Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Task Force, who was killed in Afghanistan on Saturday 30th October 2010.

Today we remember Lance Corporal Jack Paolucci, 19, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, and his fiancée Private Courtney Jennings, 18, Adjutant’s General Corps. Lcpl Paolucci and Private Jennings died when a Renault Clio they were travelling in veered off the road near Tidworth on Friday 29th October 2021.

Today we remember Lance Corporal Steven Sherwood of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Light Infantry who was killed on 29th October 2005, as a result of hostile action in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan. Five other members of Sherwood's patrol were injured when they came under fire.

Today we remember Private Kevin Thomas McHale of the 1st Battalion The Black Watch who died in a road traffic accident in North Babil province on 29th October 2004.

Aged 27, he was single and came from Lochgelly in Fife. He had served five years with the Battalion as a Warrior armoured vehicle driver. This was his second operational tour with The Black Watch in Iraq, having served there during the period of active combat operations in the spring of 2003. He had also served in Kosovo.

RMS Empress of Britain was a steam turbine ocean liner built between 1928 and 1931 by John Brown shipyard in Scotland and owned by Canadian Pacific Steamship Company.

She was the second of three Canadian Pacific ships named Empress of Britain – provided scheduled trans-Atlantic passenger service from spring to autumn between Canada and Europe from 1931 until 1939.

In her time Empress of Britain was the largest, fastest and most luxurious ship between the United Kingdom and Canada, and the largest ship in the Canadian Pacific fleet.

She was torpedoed on 28th October 1940 by U-32 and sank. At 42,348 GRT she was the largest liner lost in the Second World War and the largest ship sunk by a U-boat.

The Empress of Britain sank northwest of Bloody Foreland, County Donegal, on the 28th October 1940 with the loss of 45 men.

Today we remember Warrant Officer David Bellamy, Duke of Wellington Regiment, murdered by IRA terrorists on the 28th October 1979.

Warrant Officer Bellamy was killed when terrorists opened fire on his mobile patrol that was leaving the Springfield Road RUC station. Two RUC police officers were injured; Constable John Gerald Davidson was one of those injured and died three weeks later.

The four gunmen occupied a house on Crocus Street and held the family hostage. As the police Land Rover backed out of the police station, the gunmen opened fire on it. The doors were left open so soldiers could climb in.

WO Bellamy was providing cover for the two police officers who had stopped traffic to let the vehicle out. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. A sergeant in the Land Rover was hit seven times but survived the attack. He suffered wounds to his chest, both shoulders, and his left knee.

Today we remember Lieutenant Tom Tanswell of 58 (Eyre's) Battery, 12 Regiment Royal Artillery who died as a result of a road traffic accident just outside Shaibah Logistics Base, near Basrah, on Friday 27th October 2006.
