Here's a question for anyone reading.

❓ How do you replicate great mentoring when you're not in the room?

It's a question I'm currently wrestling with as I develop Power Path Mentoring.

Most of my experience has been face-to-face.

In football coaching.

Pastoral leadership in schools.

Behaviour management.

Safeguarding.

Youth development.

And one thing I've consistently found is that development happens through conversations, relationships and trust.

Not forms.

Not reports.

Not tick boxes.

The challenge is finding a way to deliver that same personalised support remotely without losing what makes it effective.

Because development isn't always about uncovering some deep hidden reason behind behaviour.

Sometimes it's about helping a young person recognise a pattern, understand the consequences and learn a better response.

I've worked with students who could read a room better than most adults.

They knew exactly which buttons to press.

Exactly how to get a reaction.

Exactly how to influence an outcome.

Sometimes the goal was simple: get removed from a lesson they didn't want to be in and gain access to something they did want to do instead.

When you step back and look at it objectively, that's actually a sophisticated skill set.

Observation.

Communication.

Influence.

Strategy.

Adaptability.

The issue isn't the skill.

It's the direction it's being used in.

The same young person who can manipulate a situation to avoid a lesson today could become an effective leader, coach, salesperson, business owner or manager tomorrow.

My role has never been to change who they are.

It's to help them recognise the strengths they already have, understand the consequences of how they're using them, and develop the mindset and behaviours that move them closer to their goals rather than further away.

That's the thinking behind a mentoring approach I'm currently developing through Power Path Mentoring.

Taking the personalised conversations, coaching and development work that happens face-to-face and finding a way to make it accessible beyond the room.

Still lots to refine.

But it's an exciting challenge.

Football has always been one of the biggest teachers in my life.

One period that stands out most was my time at Alfreton Town FC , around the U19s and being involved with the first team environment.

Here’s a photo from when we won the U19s league.
What a team by the way 👌🏻💥

(Quick point, When you see this have Kasabian Clubfoot in your head, If You Know You Know) 🎶

At the same time, I was training with the first team, travelling to away games and making a few appearances. Being around experienced players, ex pros and lads who went on to play across League Two and even the Premier League was a big step up and a massive learning curve.

The coaching staff had a huge influence on me too. In particular, the U19s manager, who later managed me again in senior football. That consistency in standards and leadership stuck with me.

It didn’t take long to realise that talent alone isn’t enough.

It comes down to..

Habits
DIscipline
Attitude

And

How you operate in a competitive environment.

Being around that setup, especially during a period where the club went on to achieve promotion into the National League under Nicky Law, showed me what real standards look like.

Looking back, those experiences shaped how I now work with people.

In education, coaching and mentoring, the biggest changes I see aren’t physical, they’re behavioural and mental.

That’s a big part of what I now focus on through powerpathmentoring Helping people build discipline, understand standards and take ownership of their development in football, education and life.

Because football was never just football.

It was preparation.

💥 🌟 🚨 News 🚨🌟💥

Over the last few years, Team LJF has been built around fitness and helping people improve physically.

But the biggest impact I’ve had hasn’t just come from workouts.

It’s come from working with people on mindset, discipline, behaviour and standards. Helping them build structure, confidence and direction not just in the gym, but in life.

That’s where my focus is moving.

My background has taken me through football, education and coaching environments. From playing semi professional football with clubs including Alfreton Town FC, & locally Corby Town FC, Stamford AFC, Harborough Town FC, leading as a Head of Year in secondary education, working with young people on behaviour, wellbeing and development.

All of that has shaped what I’m building now.

A way of working with people through discipline, mindset and standards, using football and structured environments to help them develop both on and off the pitch.

With regards to fitness and personal training, I’ll still be working with a limited number of people on a one to one and small group basis, but my main focus now is mentoring, youth development and football.

This page will start to reflect that more over time.

If you’ve supported Team LJF up to now, I appreciate it more than you probably realise. This is just the next step.

If you are involved in:

Football, Education or Working with Young People

And want to know more about what I’m building, feel free to message me.

Over the last few years, my work has moved through different phases from fitness coaching and bootcamps, into education and football environments.

That chapter of bootcamp and online coaching has now naturally come to a close as I shift focus towards something more aligned long term.

A lot of my reflection comes back to football, particularly my time with Corby Town FC a period that helped shape my mindset around standards, discipline and environment. Especially as joining Corby was also the same time I moved to live in Corby from my home town. Here's some snaps of me playing.

Alongside experience in education and supporting young people, it’s become clear that the biggest impact I’ve had is not just physical training, but mindset, behaviour and development.

That’s what has led me towards working with young people through structure, discipline and accountability within football and education settings.

This feels like the right direction moving forward.

I’ve shared the full post on LinkedIn for anyone who wants the deeper story.

As PowerPath Mentoring moves closer to being delivered in education and sports programme settings, I’ve been reflecting on where the philosophy and skills behind it really come from.

One of the biggest periods of growth for me was during the COVID-19 pandemic, working as a Funeral Director and later a Service Manager.

My role wasn’t just organising funerals. It was leading some of the hardest conversations people will ever face.
Telling families they could only bring a few people.
Explaining they couldn’t visit their loved one again.
Managing anger, grief, fear, and confusion, often all at once.

At the same time, I was supporting staff who were having those same conversations every day, while also trying to balance long shifts with home schooling and family pressures of their own.

That period taught me powerful lessons about:

• Staying calm under pressure
• Communicating with clarity and respect
• Managing my own emotions so I could support others
• Leading people through uncertainty and challenge

Those lessons now influence how I work with young people, especially student athletes, who are learning to manage emotions, expectations, and performance both in the classroom and on the pitch.

From my experience, I believe communication skills, emotional awareness, and personal responsibility should be developed earlier and given more priority in young people’s lives.

At PowerPath Mentoring, these principles are embedded into everything we do. They’re used to improve behaviour, support smarter decisions, and build positive mindsets and resilience.

Mentoring doesn’t always happen across a desk.
In fact, for many young people, that’s the last place it really lands.

The students who often need support the most aren’t always the ones who open up in formal meetings or structured conversations.

They’re the ones:
• Pushing boundaries
• Testing people
• Struggling to sit still
• Switching off in classrooms

But put them in the right environment — a pitch, a gym, a practical session — and you often see a completely different person.

✅ More energy.
✅ More engagement.
✅ More personality.
✅ More honesty.

That’s where real mentoring can start.

Not through forced conversations, but through shared experiences, movement, and moments that feel natural and real.

No labels.
No lectures.
No overcomplication.

Just practical environments, honest conversations, and the right guidance at the right time.

Young people get labelled very quickly.

“Disruptive.”
“Lazy.”
“Unmotivated.”
“Hard work.”

And once that label sticks, it can follow them everywhere.
But change the expectations…

change the environment…

And you often see a completely different person.

The “lazy” student becomes the hardest worker.

The “disruptive” one becomes a leader.

The “unmotivated” one suddenly cares.

Sometimes the problem isn’t the young person.

It’s the label.
