Stonyhurst Association

Stonyhurst Association The Stonyhurst Association’s primary objective is to foster a strong spirit of union amongst past pupils and friends of Stonyhurst College.

This spirit of union has been fostered in a variety of ways reflecting the spirit of succeeding generations. Recently, this has been evidence by a strong charitable emphasis, embedded with similar developments within the College. This was formalised in 1985, when the Association was granted charitable status by the Charity Commission.

My Dear Mother: Letters Home from an English Soldier, 1933–1951
Edited by Hugh Trappes-Lomax OS 61

The Stonyhurst Association is delighted to be the sole stockist of this remarkable book by Hugh Trappes-Lomax.

A remarkable collection of letters sent home from India, Palestine and the Gold Coast by Nicholas Trappes-Lomax OS 1929 to his mother in Lancashire has been transformed into far more than a wartime archive.

Through these vivid and personal letters, Hugh paints a fascinating portrait of his father’s life, tracing his journey from the Lancashire Fusiliers to the Pay Corps against the backdrop of a rapidly changing world and the final decades of the British Empire.

Blending family history, military life, Catholic recusancy and the customs of a now largely vanished era, My Dear Mother offers an engaging and deeply human insight into twentieth-century Britain and beyond.

Perfect for readers interested in military history, social history, Lancashire heritage and personal memoirs.

📚 My Dear Mother is exclusively available to purchase from the Stonyhurst Association Office for £15. All proceeds will kindly be donated in support of the good work of the Stonyhurst Association.

We were delighted to welcome OS 1976 back to Stonyhurst last weekend as they celebrated their 50 Year Reunion.

The celebrations began on Friday evening with a reunion dinner at the Savile Club in London, where almost 50 members of the year group gathered before some of them made the journey back to Stonyhurst for Sunday’s events.

Sunday began with Mass in St Peter’s Church, celebrated by Fr Tim Curtis SJ, who also kindly blessed a commemorative plaque after the service. The group then made their way to five newly planted cherry trees, gifted by the year group in memory of friends from their year who have passed away.

After lunch in the Bayley Room, the group enjoyed tours of the College and the Collections, spending the afternoon sharing memories, catching up with old friends, and returning to places that still hold such strong connections for so many of them.

We're proud to support Max Buxton OS 2023, who is competing in the 2026 British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) behind the wheel of his Toyota Corolla.
Max is taking on the challenge of one of the world's most competitive racing series, but his mission extends far beyond the track. As an official Wildlife Emergency Ambassador, Max is using his platform to raise vital awareness for endangered species and frontline conservation efforts.
Inspired by the Stonyhurst motto "Quant Je Puis" - as much as I can - Max is pushing himself not just to compete at the highest level of motorsport, but to make a meaningful difference for the natural world.
For Max, this season is about more than just the race. It's about giving back to a cause close to his heart. Support and awareness raised will go towards the Wildlife Emergency Fund, providing urgent care and protection for animals in crisis across the globe.

We are delighted to share a wonderful update celebrating two outstanding OS brothers Barry O'Driscoll OS 60 and John O'Driscoll OS 71.

Back in 2009, to mark Barry’s Presidency of the Stonyhurst Association, Irish OS came together to fund a commemorative plaque at the newly redeveloped Lansdowne Road stadium, proudly reading:
“Barry & John O’Driscoll – Ireland, Stonyhurst”

Recently, at the All Ireland League Finals, John revisited the plaque, a special moment reflecting not just personal achievement, but a shared legacy between two brothers who have given so much to the game of rugby.

Barry represented Ireland four times and went on to become a leading voice in player welfare, serving as Medical Officer for the IRFU and at World Rugby level. His principled stance on concussion and player safety has left a lasting impact on the sport.

John enjoyed a remarkable international career, earning 26 caps for Ireland and representing the British & Irish Lions on two tours, including six Test matches. Following his playing days, he dedicated years to rugby governance at national and international level a commitment now recognised in his role as President of the IRFU.

Together, Barry and John represent the very best of Stonyhurst , excellence, integrity, and lifelong contribution both on and off the field.

A legacy to be incredibly proud of. 👏

Film Club at Farm Street Church – Thursday 30 April 2026

The Tim Hetherington Film Club returns on Thursday 30 April in Arrupe Hall (6.30pm for a 7.00pm start).

This month’s film is The Angels’ Share (2012), a warm and quietly funny comedy-drama from Ken Loach. It follows Robbie, a young man given one last chance to turn his life around, who finds unexpected inspiration during a visit to a whisky distillery.

Relaxed and engaging, the film has been described as an uplifting story of redemption, and was awarded the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

There is no charge to attend. Refreshments will be available, with donations welcome.

We’re proud to support Marie Obwaller OS 2011, who is running the London Marathon this April in aid of Dementia UK.

Marie is taking on this challenge in memory of her godfather, an avid runner who sadly passed away from dementia. Inspired by the Stonyhurst motto “Quant Je Puis” -as much as I can- , Marie is pushing herself not just to complete the race, but to make a meaningful difference.

For Marie, the marathon is about more than crossing the finish line. It’s about raising awareness, supporting families affected by dementia, and giving back to a cause close to her heart. Funds raised will go towards Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurses, who provide vital specialist support to families facing this devastating illness.

Every donation helps ensure that families receive the care and guidance they need, often at the most difficult moments of their lives.

If you would like to support Marie and her fundraising, you can do so here:

Wishing you the very best of luck, Marie, we’ll be cheering you on all the way 👏
