It is with profound sadness that we join the global Catholic community in mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. A visionary leader, a voice for the marginalised, and a humble servant of God, Pope Francis leaves an indelible mark on the Church and the world.

As the first Jesuit Pope, he embodied the core values of Ignatian spirituality: Discernment, compassion, and a commitment to justice that resonate deeply with The Stonyhurst Foundation's mission. His papacy was defined by bold advocacy for the poor, environmental stewardship (Laudato Si’), and dialogue across divides, inspiring millions to live their faith with courage and openness.

Pope Francis' emphasis on forming “Men and Women for Others” mirrors our dedication to providing opportunities for pupils to lead with conscience, competence, and care. We will continue to honour his legacy by supporting this community where faith, reason, and service converge.

We invite all to pray for the repose of his soul and to reflect on his challenge to build a Church that is “a field hospital for the wounded.” May his example of mercy and humility guide us forward.

Requiescat in pace.

The Heart of Stonyhurst: A Jesuit Education That Lasts a Lifetime

At the core of Stonyhurst College lies something far greater than bricks and mortar—it’s the enduring legacy of a Jesuit education. Rooted in faith, service, and the pursuit of excellence, this education shapes not just minds, but hearts and souls for life.

At the top of the Avenue, Our Lady of Stonyhurst stands as a constant reminder of the values that bind our community together. Her presence, overlooking the bustling life of the school, symbolises the guiding principles of cura personalis (care for the whole person), a dedication to justice, and a call to be men and women for others.

This spirit, anchored by Our Lady of Stonyhurst, is woven into every aspect of Stonyhurst life. It’s in the friendships forged whilst at Stonyhurst and the lifetimes that follow. It’s in how we challenge ourselves to grow, both academically and morally and

The Stonyhurst Foundation is proud to carry forward this legacy, ensuring that future generations can experience the transformative power of a Jesuit education. Together, we can open doors for young people who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to be part of this extraordinary community.

What does a Jesuit education mean to you? How has it shaped your life? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Lost and Found: Tales from the Avenue Ponds

If the Avenue ponds could talk, they might have quite the collection of stories to tell. From footballs and rugby balls to the occasional piece of lost school uniform, the water has been the beneficiary.

Among the tales of lost items, one stands out: the story of a Rolex lost in the ponds years ago. Whether fact or fiction, this story captures the imagination and adds to the mystique of these murky waters.

The Stonyhurst Foundation is working to ensure that more young people can create their own memories here. By supporting our mission, you can help transform lives and keep the spirit of Stonyhurst alive for future generations.

Tales from the ponds

We have previously retold the tale of Stonyhurst College’s famously pampered ducks, geese, and swans, and the shocking revelation that they were being fed chocolate Hob Nobs by well-meaning visitors. Today, as the spring sunshine bathes the Avenue ponds, we can report that the wildfowl continue to goad tourists as they take in the stunning backdrop of Stonyhurst College.

Yesterday, the pupils were casting lines, hoping to catch a fish or two. We suspect that our avian residents, along with the visiting heron that stalks the bank in search of a fishy treat, may have gotten there beforehand.

Originally dug in 1696 by Sir Nicholas Shireburn and extended to thier present size of 660 x 112 feet, the ponds are an iconic element of the Stonyhurst vista and very much part of the Stonyhurst College identity.

The Stonyhurst Foundation is working to ensure that more young people can experience this unique environment.

Doors of Opportunity: A Stonyhurst Journey

Every door at Stonyhurst College tells a story. Some you choose to open, like the door to the Academy Room, where you might discover a passion for the stage or watch the upcoming College production of Guys and Dolls; or the door to the More Library, where you can get lost in books and ideas. Others, like the Headmaster’s office, you might have been 'encouraged' to walk through (we’ve all been there).

A Stonyhurst College education is about choices. It’s about the doors you open, the ones you leave closed, and the ones that open unexpectedly, leading you to places you never imagined.

The Stonyhurst Foundation is committed to opening these doors for young men and women who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to do so. By supporting our mission, you can help ensure that more students can walk through the doors of Stonyhurst and embark on a journey that will transform their lives.

Can you name where each of these doors leads? Let us know in the comments!

"Take two pills and come back in the morning if it still hurts"

A trip to the Infirmary often ended with a cynical prod, a glance at the weather, and a diagnosis of "hypochondria" just in time for a games lesson on wind-swept sports pitches. Healthcare at Stonyhurst College has fortunately come a long way since then.

Today, Stonyhurst College's newly refurbished Health and Wellbeing Centre in the Shireburn Quadrangle offers 24/7 care, drop-in clinics, and a holistic approach to pupil wellbeing. It’s a far cry from the "robust" care of yesteryear, but it reflects Stonyhurst's commitment to nurturing the whole person—mind, body, and spirit.

Fresh air and exercise still have their place, but inclusive care is now recognised as vital for pupils to thrive. Addressing medical conditions, promoting independence, and providing tailored support ensures that every pupil can fully embrace the Stonyhurst experience.

The Old infirmary was converted from the coach houses in 1842-43 and now serves as a boarding house - like healthcare, its repurposing is a testament to how Stonyhurst evolves while honouring its history.

The Stonyhurst Foundation is dedicated to opening this transformative education to as many deserving young people as possible. Together, we can ensure that future generations benefit from the same care, opportunity, and Jesuit values that shaped us.

"Quant Je Puis" – As Much As I Can

The Stonyhurst College motto, “Quant Je Puis” (As much as I can) is more than just a phrase. It’s a call to action. A reminder that we have the power to make a difference.

The seemingly endless opportunities shaped us, whether on the stage, the sports field, the classroom, or in the CCF. These opportunities taught resilience, curiosity, and the courage to embrace the unknown. They imbue Stonyhurst men and women with a character that guides lives.

Together, we must do as much as we can.

At Stonyhurst College, even the stairs have a story to tell.

Installed in the 1880s during the great rebuilding, the iconic stair treads are more than just a way to get from one floor to another—they’re a living piece of history. Made up of 30,240 wooden cubes set into metal grids, these steps are the unsung heroes of the College. Known as the ‘Hawksley Patent Step,’ they’ve proven so durable that the company that made them went bankrupt because no one needed replacements. Talk about being too good at your job!

When restoration was attempted in the 1950s, the original firm, J. Westwood of Bow Street, had long since disappeared. But in 1991-92, George Dewhurst & Co stepped up and completely restored them. Now, 30 years later, they’re still going strong—squeaks, creaks, and all.

These stairs have carried generations of pupils, staff, and visitors. They’ve witnessed triumphs, the occasional tumble, and probably a few whispered secrets. They’re not just steps; they’re a shared experience, a connection to the past, and a reminder that some things last a lifetime.

Here’s to another 30 years of life-affirming experiences.

Signal Struggles at Stonyhurst: A Divine Connection

Mobile phone signals are well known for patchiness in old buildings. Have you ever tried to get phone reception at Stonyhurst College? It’s like searching for Wi-Fi in the Amazon rainforest - elusive, frustrating, and occasionally accompanied by a sense of existential dread.

Today's pupil body all agree that there’s one sacred spot where the digital gods smile upon us: right by the statue of St Aloysius outside the glass doors. It’s as if he’s saying, “Here, my child, I grant you… one bar.”

From a seat of studies, to a seat of comfort.

It's been a beautifully crisp , winter's day at Stonyhurst, and the Upper Gallery pipes are doing their bit to keep everyone warm. Once the resting place for meticulously crafted Latin translations and complex algebraic equations awaiting the masters' discerning eyes, these days, there primary function is less about academic achievement and more about providing warm seating for chilly pupils between classes.
