Our new project 'Library of things' is progressing well. Thanks to Chesterfield Borough Council for their support through the Community Grant Fund.

We have been cleaning out and painting our new premises for the Library. Thanks to all the volunteers who have helped so far.

We are looking for more volunteers to help with the Library of Things project. Could you give a few hours to help us? We are looking for people who can help us source items for the library, or test and maintain library items, or serve customers and more. Please use the QR code to tell us how you would like to help.

Did you know?

The potato became the first vegetable to be grown in space in October 1995.

Repair Cafe
Saturday 17th October, 10am-1pm (all items need to be booked in by 12.15pm) at Chesterfield Baptist Church, Cross St S40 4ST

This coincides with International Repair Day 2026 - see https://repairday.org/ for full information.

A variety of items were brought to our Repair Cafe at Chesterfield Baptist Church last month, including but not limited to, two nerf guns, a twenty year old heated airer, and a lock mechanism.

This eye catching statement lamp was part of a two piece set bought in a house sale and had sadly been knocked off a table by vacuum cable, luckily thanks to our fixer this lamp will be back to shining bright throughout the autumn months and beyond.

Our fixers don’t just look at electronics either, come on down to next months repair cafe on Saturday 17th October 2026 if you have any broken jewellery or clothing in need of repair, our fixers will also give advice and help you to pick up techniques so you can try the next repair yourself.

Scarsdale Garden Drop-In: Friday 16 October, 10.30am–12pm

Our SUNS drought resistant planting has definitely shown its resilience in the prolonged dry weather. The planting on the wider community garden has coped less well but there are still autumn flowerings to enjoy. We are trying to contribute towards our share of the garden's autumn maintenance. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped with weeding at our September drop-in.

Garden Drop-In: Friday 16 October, 10.30am–12pm. Another opportunity to come along for an informal drop-in and have a look around. If you fancy getting your hands dirty, there is a little weeding to do! Everyone is welcome to drop in for as much or as little of the session as they like. Tools available. Bring gloves if you can. Library of Things
Last Saturday we got the keys to the building to house our new project: A Library of Things. A place where people can borrow, share and return items, building a culture of sustainability, cooperation and reduced waste. We have been helped to achieve this with a grant from Chesterfield Borough Council.

The place needs a bit of work to clean and tidy it first, as you can see from the pictures. Anyone who fancies helping with this, please contact: [email protected]

It'll be a month or so before we can start taking in items for the library and we hope to launch the library for borrowers early in 2027. Watch out for more information about how you can help with this new project in the coming weeks.

Litter Picking
Thursday 8th October 10am to 11:30am
Queen's Park Chesterfield, near the cricket pavilion

This is a regular (every other month) litter pick starting at Queen's Park and clearing the surrounding areas. Come along and help count up and categorise the litter we find. All equipment provided. More details here https://dcrt.org.uk/event/queens-park-cleanup-day/

Everyone had a great time at our Apple Pressing Day at Loundsley Green last Saturday. Apples and pears came in from around Chesterfield. We chopped and squeezed the fruit and gave out lots of bottles of juice. And the sun shone all day!

We also had a children's apple trail and a tombola organised by Friends of Holmebrook valley park.

Today's the day! We're taking pre-orders for Potato Day 2027.

Get ahead of next season's vegetable growing by visiting www.potatoday.org.uk for potatoes, onions, shallots, seeds, and green manures. These will be available to pre-order until 12th November 2026.

Don't forget to share to spread the word. You can buy as few or as many tubers as you like, making it perfect for container growing, gardens, or allotments.
