This year's theme for Refugee Week is courage: the courage to face the unknown, learn new languages and navigate unfamiliar systems. world.

Refugee Week 2026 calls on us to come together and share the courage to welcome and to celebrate culture and community.

This theme reflects Chertsey Museum's new exhibition, curated by our Ukrainian Support Manager Oskana. "From War to Welcome" looks at the challenges of leaving home and adapting to life in a new country, and highlights the support provided by local people who welcomed newcomers.

Runnymede Borough Council said: "The exhibition offers a powerful insight into the human stories behind the conflict and celebrates the strength, hope and determination of those who have made Runnymede their home."

This Loneliness Awareness Week (15โ€“21 June), we're launching two brand new 'chatty benches' in North West Surrey!

The benches were hand-built by wonderful volunteers at Camberley and District Mens Shed and Chertsey Mens Shed, using wood kindly donated by Travis Perkins Woking and PTL Sunbury. They are now in place at two lovely local spots: Camberley Bowling Club's bowling green and the wildlife garden at Chertsey Library.

The idea is to sit down and see who you end up talking to - because sometimes all it takes is a friendly face and a spare few minutes to make someone's day.

The benches are connected to our Time to Talk befriending service, which supports people facing loneliness and isolation across North West Surrey. As our befriending manager Elaine says: "Research shows that loneliness can increase the risk of depression, anxiety, heart disease and dementia. Time to Talk ensures that no one in North West Surrey has to face loneliness alone."

A quick reminder that there's just a week to go until our next Charity Networking Event on 12 June at Enterprise Egham.

For the second year, we are opening up the event to give the floor to our local VCSE groups.

Organisations will have the option to take a short fiveโ€‘minute slot to introduce your work, talk about current projects or services, and share opportunities to collaborate. Spaces are limited, and priority will go to groups that did not present at last yearโ€™s similar event. Please email Alison Morey if you'd like to book one of these presentation slots: [email protected]

These networking events are a great opportunity to learn about the work happening in our area and explore opportunities for collaboration.
