Time for some more marvellous Mallard facts to start the week 🦆

Did you know that mallards typical cruising speed in flight is around 55 miles per hour? It's surprising we don't see more of them setting off speed cameras 🎦

With a decent tail wind behind them, they can reach speeds of up to 100 miles per hour which is pretty impressive for an underrated bird 💨

Next time you see them flying, try to guess how fast they might be going!

We hope you’re having a great weekend 😎 At Hayley’s house it’s been like live as the starlings that were nesting there have fledged successfully 🥰
They’ve had 2 healthy noisy chicks that are certainly making their presence known and pestering their parents for food!
Here’s a few pictures of them with their parents 🐥
Have you seen any fledglings this weekend?

Today is World Saltmarsh Day 🌿
Right here in North Kent, our saltmarshes are a lifeline for birds on one of the world’s great migration routes.
Each year, species like curlew, redshank and brent geese arrive after long journeys, relying on these rich coastal habitats to rest and refuel.
These landscapes may look quiet—but they are full of life and global importance.

🛹✨ Have Your Say on Jackson's Recreation Ground Skatepark improvements ✨🛹

Exciting plans are underway to redevelop Jackson's Recreation Ground — and we want to hear what you think.

Part of Jacksons Field is classified as a scheduled monument which means we're restricted to what we can do in this area. Historic England have advised that we build a separate new facility away from the scheduled monument.
There will be a new facility which will offer more of a street course than the existing skate park.

We're also planning to refurbish the existing skate park.

🦆Our bird of the month, the Mallard has inspired several sayings.

🏏In cricket, 'out for a duck' means a score of zero as the shape of the zero on the scoreboard resembles a duck's egg.

🫗The saying 'water off a duck's back' is literally related to Mallards. They have a preen gland near their tail that produces an oil which the birds apply to their feathers to make them waterproof.

Can you think of any other ducky related sayings?

Whilst the majority of Brent Geese have made their way northwards back to Siberia, we still have a couple hanging around on the Thames and Medway.
This one was spotted by Hayley yesterday near Riverside Country Park.
It’s likely to be a non-breeding younger bird or maybe unable to make the long flight this time. We’ll keep our eyes peeled…..
Have you seen any Brent Geese around recently?

Happy 1st of the month! Continuing our theme of celebrating our underrated birds, this month we shine the spotlight on the marvellous Mallard 🦆

You’ve probably seen them… but how well do you really know the Mallard?
These adaptable ducks aren’t just found on countryside ponds—they thrive along our coasts too! Male Mallards are easy to spot with their glossy green heads, while females wear mottled brown feathers that help them blend into their surroundings.

Fun fact: Mallards are the ancestors of most domestic ducks worldwide! 🐤
Next time you’re by the water, take a moment to watch them—they’re masters of calm in busy environments.
