The Community Impact Initiative Award winning not-for-profit proudly delivering projects that support people to make positive change The Community Impact Initiative C.I.C.

(known as the Cii) is an award-winning social change organisation committed to the development, improvement, and sustainability of our communities. We’re a not-for-profit organisation that innovatively combines skill development and learning with community regeneration to achieve positive socio-economic change. We support people to improve their health and wellbeing, build their confidence and self-esteem, learn new skills, achieve qualifications, and make positive life improvements through the sympathetic renovation of empty properties in our local communities. We regenerate and invigorate our physical communities, returning empty properties to the housing market in an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient manner, improving the living standards of our communities, and providing an affordable and effective solution to the housing and empty property issues of Wales.

“This experience has been life changing. I’ve always wanted to be a jack of all trades; I now have the confidence to say, “I can do this.” I can finally see a future in construction.”

10 months ago, Karrina started her Women Construct Wales volunteering journey. Today, she's part of the team building the new Velindre Cancer Centre, one of the biggest construction projects in Wales.

It started with a single site visit and ended with a job offer.

Read more about what partnership, equal opportunities and self-motivation can mean for the future of women in construction here: https://www.the-cii.org/women-in-construction-karrina/.

A huge thank you to Karrina for letting us be part of her journey, and to Sacyr UK & Ireland and F P Hurley & Sons Ltd for helping to create this opportunity 💛

Huge news! We’re finalists🥳

We couldn’t be prouder to share that we’ve been shortlisted for the Supporting Communities category at this year’s Chartered Institute of Housing Welsh Housing Awards!

This category celebrates the organisations and initiatives that create opportunities for the communities around them, like our Sustaining a Legacy partnership project with Tai Heulwen, supported by WCVA CGGC .

It’s through this project, children in care will have a safe place to call home, local volunteers will gain the skills and confidence to pursue new career pathways and we'll have 1 less empty home on the streets🙌

We’re incredibly grateful to be recognised alongside so many inspiring organisations, all working towards brighter futures for Welsh communities Pembrokeshire County Council, Hafod Housing, Cynon Taf Community Housing Group, Hedyn in partnership with JG Hale, Monmouthshire Housing Association and Cartrefi Conwy 💛

Winners to be announced during the Welsh Housing Awards on 19th November - wish us luck!🤞

It’s World Mental Health day 💚

In a world that can be relentlessly fast-paced, overwhelmingly busy, and so loud we can barely think, taking time to pull away and mentally check-in is more important than ever.

But that can look different for everyone and spaces need to exist to meet people where they’re at.

We see this every day on our projects. Whether it’s that 5 minute coffee break, taking a sledge hammer to a wall or standing back and seeing the results, we see the mental shift and the weight lift from the shoulders of our volunteers. Because that’s the outlet that works for them.

So today, we’re celebrating every space that gives people the chance to pull away from everyday life and put their mental health first, in whatever way works for them 💚

If you need mental health support, Mind (0300 123 3393) and Samaritans (116 123) are a call away.

Quiet on site 🤫 a plumbing masterclass is in session💧

This week our Building Resilience in Communities volunteers took part in a beginner plumbing workshop to learn from tutor Steve all about the different materials used, how to make simple connections, and fix minor plumbing issues.

It’s the kind of knowledge that goes a long way when it’s 9pm on a Saturday night and the pipe connection under your sink starts leaking (rule #1 - don’t forget to turn the water off!).

A huge thank you to Langstone for generously providing the plumbing materials and making this workshop happen 💛

Hi! We’re The Cii👋

You might be new here and have no idea who we are (💔). How ever you landed here, let us introduce ourselves and what we’re doing to improve communities across south Wales.

(Or you might know exactly who we are, and in that case, enjoy some nice pictures👌).

You wouldn’t believe the transformation just the outside of this project has had already 🤯

✅ Rendering is done
✅New fence is up
✅Patio installed and
✅The drive is looking fresh ..even the gates got an upgrade 🙌

It’s just the garden that needs some serious TLC now, and JG Hale and LBS Builders Merchants have helped us out a ton on this one (or many tons we should say).

By providing us with the top soil they've brought us closer to having a beautiful green space for the children who will be living here to enjoy.

A huge thank you LBS and JG Hale for your generosity and commitment to creating a positive space for those who need it most 💚

It doesn’t look bad but we had to ban volunteers from this project…until now 🙌

Why? The dreaded asbestos 🫠

After damp issues, asbestos is a common problem when renovating old homes, and needs professional testing and removal. BUT now that’s gone we have finally (and safely!) welcomed this project's volunteers!

Through this project our volunteers won’t just be building their skills, they’ll be turning this empty property into a specialised home for children in care💛

“Sorry, you just haven’t got enough experience for us to take you on.” 💔

Heard that before? It can be really frustrating, you need experience to get the job, but how can you build experience without being given the chance to?

From building on your skills to experiencing a small scale site, joining a Cii project could be how you break the rejection cycle.

Just look at this transformation already 🤯🏚️

This has been our biggest project yet, full of the challenges that come with years of neglect and battering from typical Welsh weather 🌧️

BUT the Sustaining a Legacy team have worked miracles on this property so far. It’s been a demanding project and through it’s challenges it has provided volunteers with incredible learning experiences and turned this group into a team.

There’s still a way to go, but once it’s finished it’ll be a quality, safe space for children in care to call home. And that’s worth all the ‘surprises' we’ve encountered.

What happens on results day doesn’t have to decide your future ❌

Learning in a classroom doesn’t suit all of us, but getting hands and learning through practical experience? Perfect🤌

Whether you want to get into the trades, try something new or don’t actually know what to do next, joining a Cii project is your chance to learn from experienced tutors, access funded training and qualifications and gain news skills.

You decide what happens next, not your results.
