Passing of Jimmy Dempsey

An Appreciation.
by President John Esler

The Rotary Club of Coleraine mourns the loss of Jimmy Dempsey, a true friend and a dedicated Rotarian.
We will remember his many years of service to the community, his commitment to service and his unwavering dedication to Rotary’s ideals.
Beyond Rotary he was a friend, a mentor and a truly compassionate individual.

Whilst I first met Jimmy in 1987, through Coleraine Round Table, I really got to know the real gentleman through The Rotary Club of Coleraine which Jimmy joined in 1997. He was a hard worker within the club, his forte being fundraising and event organisation, which he exhibited from day one until a couple of years ago when, regrettably, ill health curtailed his ability to give the 100% he always insisted on.

Jimmy of course had a full life outside Rotary, amongst his other skills being an accomplished sailor, however I am here to write about Jimmy the Rotarian.

As a club we will miss Jimmy terribly, not least his terrible jokes, the content of which we will leave to those who experienced them to explain their content to others.
He never sought the top jobs in Rotary, happier as a doer, and as far as he was concerned “If it’s not broken don’t fix it”. Simple and very effective.

The Rotary Club of Coleraine sends its deepest condolences to his wife Barbara, daughters Nora, Paula, Sara, son Barry, and all the family circle.
