Update to Hard to Recycle Scheme
We are pleased to report an increase in the range of items which can be recycled through our hard to recycle bins. This is as a result of support from AES (Alliance Environmental Services Ltd, a company which provides environmental services to High Peak Borough Council). The items which can now be handled are:
* Soft plastics – crisp packets, sweet wrappers, biscuit wrappers and flexible packaging
* Stationery items – pens, empty glue sticks, correction supplies, pencil sharpeners, staplers and hole punchers, clips and clamps, file pockets and binders, plastic file dividers and folders.
This allows soft plastics to be recycled at a range of locations across town (see our website for bin locations) and also provides a guarantee that the items will be recycled into new products, a guarantee that is not available for plastics & films deposited in the big cages at supermarkets, much of which goes for incineration.
A reminder that toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, interdental brushes and flossing sticks can be recycled at Boots in Spring Gardens. Registration is required prior to depositing, see here: https://www.boots.com/shopping/boots-recycling-scheme. The Boots scheme also accepts a wide range of other beauty, health and wellness product packaging. Medicine blister packs can be recycled at both Boots and Superdrug.

If you just want rid of an old device why not donate it to charity - there are lots of good causes that want to put them to use including Barnardos and British Heart Foundation.

Thank you to all the lovely Buxton people who donated used Halloween costumes and fabric for us to use last Friday for our Upcycling With A Spooky Twist activity as part of the Green Assembly. We had big fun and used up lost of materials that would otherwise have gone to waste. Now we have turned the use of the 3 donation boxes over to the Rotary Inner Wheel who are collecting wool to make blankets for new mothers and their babies. You will find the boxes, re-labelled, in The Pump Room, Library, and Station waiting room.

Access to the Crescent Assembly Rooms is via steps. Wheelchair users can access the Colonnade at either end of the Crescent:

There is a lift within the building and accessible toilets.

There are no food or drink facilities within the Crescent itself, but the Pump Room, just opposite, offers a range of drinks and delicious cakes.

Ghent’s new €20m (£17m) design museum is a gleaming monument to recycling it was built using everything from car windscreens, seaweed and old toilets to rubble dug straight from the building site. Its bricks, many of which were pressed by the public during a two-day festival, are made of pulverised construction waste and hydrated lime. As well as saving two-thirds of the embodied carbon of a regular fired clay brick, they will continue to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere in the coming years, as the lime cures.
“We’re not claiming this is … a solution to the climate crisis,” says Sian Ricketts, Carmody Groarke’s sustainability lead. “But it is a sort of 82,000-brick proof of concept that you can do something different.”
