It’s Market Day!

Today for International Day of Charity our MP invited representatives of voluntary and community sector groups from across the High Peak for afternoon tea to say thank you for the work we do and the difference we make. The spirit of our area was clear when 150 people accepted the invitation and they had to move it to a bigger venue.
Some excellent conversations and a nice buzz in the room, although most of us didn’t get to speak with Jon Pearce directly.

Big thanks to the Buxton Welcome Group who meet fortnightly in St Mary's Church on Dale Road for the very warm welcome (yes really) this afternoon. We were delighted to introduce a new group of people to the Library of Things, Repair Cafe, Dispersed Orchard, and other active projects to build our community resilience. Thanks for the invitation and for the cake.

Recently one of the Buxton Library of Things gazebos helped make a little boy's birthday party a great success. His Mum also borrowed our Happy Birthday banner, and some cups and tumblers for her son's big day. We love hearing stories about what our Things get up to out in the community.

'Hot Summer Economics’ report by Triodos Bank shows that the heatwave, up to this point (and it’s not done yet), has cost the EU €180bn, which is all the growth the EU had planned for in 2026. France is set, as a result of this heatwave, to lose 1.4% in growth, throwing its economy into a 0.6% contraction. And the heat has wiped out all of the Netherlands’ anticipated growth. The authors conclude “every year of adaptation without mitigation is a year borrowed against a hotter baseline.”

BBC Radio 4’s Broadcasting House is discussing national preparedness this Sunday morning on Paddy O’Connell’s show, from 9am to 10am. They will be talking about whether households should keep food and supplies at home and, crucially, how much the government should tell the nation about the risks we face and what we should be preparing for.
This is a great opportunity to raise the National Emergency Briefing.
More than 3,450 People’s Emergency Briefing screenings have either been held or are booked across the UK, giving communities a clear, expert-led account of the risks to food, health, the economy and national security.
And the evidence suggests that this approach is working.
Researchers at the University of Bath have been independently studying its impact. Their post-event survey of more than 13,000 attendees found that, after the briefing, 57% reported feeling more hopeful, compared with 17% who felt less hopeful, while 87% felt more motivated to act.
So, if you have five minutes, please email [email protected] and encourage Paddy O’Connell to discuss the People’s Emergency Briefing. It is demonstrating that being honest with people and treating them as adults works. People do not withdraw into despair. Quite the opposite.

We strongly welcome this from the Environment Secretary, Angela Eagle.

Next Thursday 3rd Sept, Parliament will debate a call to release the full version of a partially withheld national security assessment of the severe threats to the UK from ecosystem collapse.

This is an incredibly important debate and we hope all MPs will attend. Only with full transparency and a shared understanding of the threat, can we come together and rise to this challenge.

And if honesty is the least the public should expect, we hope Angela Eagle and her colleagues agree that it's time to level with the public about the full scale of the climate and nature risks facing the country - and what must be done to protect us.

That is why 149 MPs are now calling for the Government to stage a live televised emergency briefing to the nation, introduced by the Prime Minister, and delivered by independent experts.
