Lots of babies and Autumn juveniles arriving still. Many of these little ones seem in day have massive internal parasites causing them to come out looking for food.
They are desparate. 🥲
Please get help as soon as possible for them 🤞🦔
So collect in a box using thick gloves or a towel.
Provide a covered hot water bottle.
No food just water and ring your needed rescue as soon as you can; these hogs are time critical 🥲

Poor Neil was brought in as soon as found. Unfortunately he had a re**al prolapse due to having lungworm, fluke, roundworm and coccidiosis 🤢 I did manage to replace it under GA and stitch in but sadly he passed away the following day…

On a positive, Don and Dobbie went this week for release to new mills and Youlgreace respectively.

Harry was a poorly juvenile from Chinley that looked “drunk”.

This is an indicator of severe dehydration when a hedgehog looks drunk so urgent treatment necessary. Despite Annemarie and James getting him to me immediately, he passed away after only an hour or so.
He passed away in warmth and safety so that’s a comfort.

Any hog out in day is not ok so keep eyes open for those poorly autumn juveniles that are coming out in daylight. I’ve had 3 already today so 🤞🤞🦔

It’s an emergency for hogs to be out in daylight so everyone be aware 🦔🦔

3 admissions today.
One is a lovely male hog called Dommo, from Macclesfield (thanks Rebecca).

I’m hoping it’s an accident (ie rubbing on a freshly painted fence) but he’s got a lot of paint on his rump. Like I say it can happen accidentally but deliberate cases do occur too.

It’s a good chance to warn the public that you must NEVER mark a wild hedgehog.
They don’t belong to anyone.
They are wild and painting them can cause a lot of distress (not to mention the fact they are more visible to predators).

The only time it’s done is in rescue by rehabbers marking babies up with a small blob of nail polish so we can identify and weigh individually. No one else should be doing it please!

This paint has been a right pain to get off and I’ve had to be careful to not stress him further so got off the worst and will try again tomorrow…
He’s also got irritated skin as a result of it, and a small burden of internal parasites too so will be treated for those too.
He’s busy tucking into his tea tonight so hopeful he’s not too upset with me 🥰🦔

What a busy time it’s been.. the autumn juveniles and babies starting to arrive now..

sadly some haven’t made it like the 3 I received separately off Brown edge rd in Buxton. All had massive internal parasite burdens and ringworm.. just a little too late….😢

I’ve had quite a few releases this week including
Victor, Pictor, Ronnie and Reggie. (All babies we’ve hand reared from 100g stage)..🦔

In total this year I’ve had 289 hogs through my care (for context, I treated 200 hogs last year, 194 the year before)
So it’s great news that more are getting attention and more hogs about, plus more people aware of what to do with poorly hogs out in the day.. 🙏🦔

So huge thanks to all those that have donated. It really helps!!

3 admissions today..,

Baby Cooper was lying out in the open in Chapel. He’s only 4 weeks old and hooching with fleas and ticks. He’s now hydrated, flea free and waiting on a poo sample whilst keeping toasty in his Brinsea incubator.
I’ve paired him with baby Jeff who came in covered in maggots and fleas on Friday.
Hoglets prefer the company of others so happy they’ve got each other🦔❤️

Daphne was lying out in open in Whaley today. Sadly she’s got an oldish strimmer injury in her hindleg and the flies were laying eggs. 😳
I’ve given her an anaesthetic and stitched her back up today 🙏 I’ll check her poo samples in due course too.

Cathy from Chinley a young female was out in the day; thin and dehydrated. She’s got a lot of roundworm and fluke on her sample..lucky girl to be rescued..

An adult male hog called Cherry was brought to me the other day as found whilst owner was out in the field. He’s got a broken spine sadly so had to euthanise the poor chap..🥲

Rescue is definitely not a bed of roses and the only consolation is offering these beautiful animals a gentle pain free end to their suffering.. 😥

On a positive had lots of releases in last few weeks., will post those another day!! 🦔🦔🦔
