📣 Farewell Floris! 🦦
Floris, a young female Eurasian otter, has been successfully returned to the wild after an extraordinary journey of rescue, rehabilitation, and recovery. 💚
She was discovered on a beach in northeast England in a poor state of health, but thanks to the swift response of Blyth Wildlife Rescue (BWR) and expert veterinary care, this resilient young otter defied the odds. It is believed that Floris became separated from her mother during the severe weather brought by Storm Floris in August 2025.
Despite her difficult start, Floris quickly showed her true character. As BWR staff recalled, she transformed from a subdued and lethargic cub into “an angry and feisty otter within 24 hours” of her rescue.
Following her initial recovery, Floris continued her rehabilitation with IOSF, where she thrived. We are delighted to share that she has now been successfully released back into the wild.
According to Grace, the release “went like a dream.” and when it was time to leave, Floris simply “walked into the box” as if she knew what lay ahead later that day. Upon arrival at the carefully selected release site, she emerged from her box and headed straight to the water’s edge, pausing to take in her new surroundings before making her way along the bank and disappearing from view.
The site was chosen for its abundance of vegetation and natural cover, providing Floris with plenty of shelter as she settled into her new environment. We expected she would spend the remainder of the day resting and exploring quietly before becoming more active after dark. 🦦
As with every successful release, this achievement was made possible by the dedication and support of many people. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who played a part in Floris’s story - from the team at Blyth Wildlife Rescue who rescued and cared for her in those critical early days, to the IOSF supporters whose donations to our Cubs in Care project and sponsorship programme helped make her rehabilitation possible. 🥰
Your support enables us to continue giving vulnerable otters like Floris a second chance. We simply could not do this work without you, and we are incredibly grateful for your continued generosity.💚
