The weather finally gave us a chance to make “Pick it Plant it” happen! We, along with Broadford and Strath Community Company (BSCC) organised a community litter pick, to clean habitats, and a tree planting afternoon, to create more!

We were delighted to have a nice spring morning to hold the event! We had a group setting off at Waterloo road end, where the other group headed north from the hall – aiming to cover most of the Broadford area. Three hours of litter picking followed where we managed to send a skip filled away from our area and ensure a cleaner Broadford for wildlife and locals to enjoy!

The afternoon was all about trees, as we headed to the Broadford Allotments, after maintaining habitats, it was time to create more! Co-ordinated by BSCC, the morning’s “litter pickers” took to planting trees around the area.

It was a highly successful community effort and we are delighted with the outcome of this. We wanted to say a massive thank you to the Highland Council for their supply of the skip for the litter, Broadford Co-op for helping provide bags and snacks and the Team Otter parents for making lunch to keep the workers fed! Finally, thanks to Nicholas for collecting all the bags and transporting them to the skip.

A massive thank you to all the community members who came to help and clear as much litter as we could! Although a successful day, we hope we don’t have to conduct any more litter picks!
Please look after our village (and your village, wherever you are reading from) and put your litter in the bin and help us be proud of our area!

On Monday, the Team Otter Broadford Primary group decided to do a litter pick of our local area after being notified by a member of the public of a particularly bad area.

The kids did a stretch of a few hundred metres and collected this amount of rubbish which is just crazy. One of the group said, when we had it all in bags, "wow, that is disgusting"!

We don't think that's its all from people littering, but potentially bins blowing over in heavy winds! Please pick up your litter if it does happen, as it doesn't need to be the kids picking it up!

So please take care of our beautiful village.

One of our members, John, along with a number of his friends and classmates are working hard on a fundraiser to support some charity work they are doing in Uganda.

Partnering with ABAANA, the group are planning to head to Uganda where they will work with children from the area to set up an after school club for children to have a safe space where they can learn, socialise and simply have fun. Furthermore, they will also be working on improving community buildings and ensuring a more enriched and positive future for the villages they are working with in.

Throughout February, John and his classmates are running every single day to raise support for this projects.

If you can support and share their worthwhile cause and help the group succeed in their plans I am sure that they will be very grateful!

On Monday, Team Otter Broadford were joined by Corry Capers for a workshop on the shore and the history of the use of our coastlines.

The workshop was led by Climavore and Daniel Cullen, with help from the amazing artwork of Sona Design. The workshop was an interactive, engaging afternoon which encouraged the children to think about how the use of our coastlines has changed from the 19th century to present day. The children gave their thoughts on different ages through poster prompts on how land was used, how it changed and what they see as the future for our shores.
The final part of the project allowed the children the opportunity to portray their ‘perfect’ shorelines in years to come. Interestingly, Oscar, decided to do a “bad” and “good” future for our coastlines. In his “bad” scenario, Oscar was concerned over over-commercialisation of our shores, with large multi-national companies, litter and reduced biodiversity. In his good scenario, he had bins, no litter signs, more wildlife and happier communities using the shore!

Overall, it was a fantastic afternoon where our group really had a chance to think about what they feel is important for our shoreline. The project was part of Climavore’s Tidal Gardens series of workshops, where they are looking at producing a more sustainable use of our shorelines. The children’s thoughts and ideas for the “Future” of our shores are now on exhibit along with the rest of the project.

A big thanks to We Are Climavore, Daniel Cullen and Sona Design for their time with our group, along with Corry Capers for joining us!

🐋Having a whale of a time🐋

It's not every day that you can finish school and then go and watch Humpback Whales but that is exactly what the Team Otter Broadford group did this Monday!

The whales have been seen around our area over the last month or so and we took the opportunity to go and see if we could spot them! As we drove up, the whale (potentially two) popped out and the decibels in the vehicles went through the roof! What a delight it was. The kids (and the adults) scurried up and down the "Moll Road" watching as the whales came up and down - with great excitement!

A really good day and although not Team Otter, that night the area was treated to an unbelievable showing of the northern lights, showing how truly lucky we are to live here!

Thanks, as always, to Nick and Callum!

We all wanted to say a massive thank you for everyone for coming out to the Team Otter Christmas Quiz!

Congratulations to the Breens & Callum for running out eventual winners.

We managed to raise £180 for the Scottish Entanglement Alliance who are working on mitigation to reduce entanglements of cetaceans around Scotland!

A massive thanks to the Broadford Hotel for hosting our quiz!

Merry Christmas all!

Earlier in the year, some of the Primary school group members sent a letter to the local school and relevant authorities of their concerns of the number of plastic bags that we had been collecting around the area during litter picks. The bags were used to give kids fruit during breaks in school and we had enquired as to whether a more sustainable way of doing so would be possible.

We are delighted that they have now decided to use reusable bowls to give the children fruit and therefore we won’t see any plastic fruit bags out and in the environment.

A big thanks to Broadford Primary School and the relevant authorities for understanding our concerns and helping our village be that little bit more sustainable!

We are delighted by this decision!

On Monday, we decided to help Broadford and Strath Community Company by collecting seaweed for their large amount of allotment space.

Midway through the task, we were interrupted by commotion in the water which we found countless seals and gulls all having a fishing frenzy. It was amazing to see, as the seals jumped, the gulls dived and fish flew out of the water attempting to get away! After a while, the seals came close and the kids got to see them semi-close and in their natural habitat. An amazing, surreal interruption!
We completed the seaweed and Oscar and Elin were award the best pickers!

Big thanks to Callum and Nicholas, as always.

Yesterday, the Primary school group took part in their first litter pick of this term and to also help "Announce" our new date for Bin It Broadford.

During our 45 minute litter pick, we picked up over 150 items including over 40 drinks containers (cans/bottles), 6 coffee cups and over 70 bits of various plastics! All in 45 minutes. Big thanks to Ella for keeping a tally of it all.

Bin-It Broadford will now take place on February 6th and we invite you all to come and join us. This will be a community litter pick and we need your help to make sure Broadford is totally clean, looking good and in pristine condition for our animals.

Big thanks to Nick and Callum for their time and help.

This week, the primary school group had a little 'trip' to Castle Moil in Kyleakin, with the sun shining!

The group walked along the shore and checked out the old, ruined castle and observed its history, as well as the wildlife on the shoreline!

Big thanks to Nick and Callum for their help.
