Pioneer Sailing Trust

Pioneer Sailing Trust page for The Pioneer Sailing Trust. https://linktr.ee/pioneerck18 Pioneer has accommodation for three qualified crew and twelve trainees.

Once it became apparent the complex restoration of Pioneer was possible, the decision was made to set up Pioneer Sailing Trust in 1999. The trust, whose founder trustees were Mary Falk, Charles Harker and Rupert Marks, is a registered charity. From day one practical help and funding has arrived in generous measure from many individuals, organisations and local businesses. Pioneer’s new purpose is

to offer young people the challenge of sailing, which often proves to be a life changing experience. As a powerful and strong sea going vessel, she is ideally suited for day sailing or passage work in the Thames estuary, across the North Sea or the English Channel. Being a crew member highlights and emphasises many vital qualities essential in life and the trust believes these practical and new experiences helps develop young people. The trust also opened Harker’s Yard in 2009 to further its work with training and education in the marine industry and provided opportunities for work experience and apprenticeships in marine engineering and boat building and repair. Pioneer Sailing Trust works closely with life development trusts, training agencies, councils, social services and other organisations devoted to improving the life prospects of young people, many of whom deal with difficult circumstances. Young people often find time at the trust opens new windows of opportunity.

Unfortunately, due to high winds and unsafe sailing conditions for young people, we were unable to take today’s school group out onto the water.

Rather than cancelling the experience day altogether, with less than 48 hours’ notice Pioneer Sailing Trust, Brightlingsea Harbour and Brightlingsea Museum came together to create an alternative shoreside programme that ensured the students still enjoyed a memorable and engaging day.

While they missed out on sailing like the other schools taking part in our multi-activity week, the pupils got hands-on with a range of traditional maritime activities, including boatbuilding skills, making rope keyrings, and creating wooden crabbing lines. They also explored Brightlingsea’s rich maritime heritage at the museum and learned important water safety messages from the RNLI.

A huge thank you to all our partners, volunteers and staff who worked so quickly to adapt the programme and provide such a valuable experience despite the challenging weather conditions. We’re incredibly grateful for the teamwork and flexibility shown by everyone involved.

Sometimes the wind has other plans, but today proved that there’s far more to maritime education than just getting out on the water!

With massive thanks to for supporting us here at Pioneer Sailing Trust!

At Pioneer Sailing Trust, we are proud to be a place where everyone can feel safe, welcome, and respected.
No matter who you are, where you come from, or how you identify, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and enjoy the freedom that sailing can bring in an environment where they feel comfortable, valued, and protected.

This Pride Month, we celebrate diversity, inclusion, and the strength that comes from embracing people from all backgrounds. We are committed to creating a community where everyone belongs and where every individual is treated with dignity and respect.

Happy Pride Month from all of us at Pioneer Sailing Trust. 🌈⛵

2, 6 HEAVE!

Our Junior Sea Cadets, senior cadet helper and volunteer staff had a brilliant time on the sail training vessel Pioneer over half term. The weather was glorious and we learnt so much. Everyone helped with the day to day running of the vessel including hoisting sails, cooking meals, scrubbing decks, steering, acting as look outs and looking after the kit. The cadets (and staff!) are pleased to have been awarded the RYA Start Yachting qualification. A couple more voyages are planned for this year.

We are grateful to the Lenox Project for making this training possible and to the staff of Pioneer Sailing Trust for providing such an amazing experience.

With thanks to Andy Lawrence for his drone pictures shared with the Pioneer Sailing Trust of us.
