National Trust Coleridge Cottage Home to Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge for three extraordinary years, now an interactive and informative experience for the whole family

A major re-presentation project in 2011 transformed Coleridge Cottage into the home Samuel Taylor Coleridge might have known, with the original 18th century rooms dressed as though the Coleridge family had just walked out of them. It was during his time in Somerset that Coleridge wrote his finest work, including 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner', 'Frost at Midnight' and Kubla Khan. This house has had a varied history, from its humble beginnings as a Georgian cottage to a Victorian Inn, before it was acquired for the National Trust in 1909, today you can hear, feel, see and touch his poetry as well as have a go at writing with a quill and bring out your very own inner poet!

'Once a humble poet,
These village streets i'd oft traverse,
Yet with these hands of straw I find,
I cannot write a single verse!' 🎃✒️

You might just spot our Samuel Taylor Coleridge scarecrow on the Nether Stowey Scarecrow Trail this week!

It's also your last chance to visit Coleridge Cottage and tearoom before we close for the winter season. Join us on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, 10am-3pm and enjoy a final autumn visit to Coleridge's former home.

🎉 Happy 254th Birthday, Samuel Taylor Coleridge 🎉

It was here, at Coleridge Cottage in Nether Stowey, that Coleridge found inspiration among the Quantock Hills, forged lifelong friendships, and wrote some of his most influential works.

Within these modest walls, extraordinary ideas took shape and more than two centuries later, his story continues to inspire visitors from around the world. Every creaking floorboard, well worn doorway and quiet corner reminds us that this was once a family home, filled with everyday life, imagination and ambition.

On what would have been Coleridge's 254th birthday, we're proud to care for the place where his remarkable journey began, and grateful to everyone who helps keep his legacy alive.

“Sea, and hill, and wood,
with all the numberless goings on of life,
Inaudible as dreams!"

✒️🍃 Happy National Poetry Day!

For over 200 years, poets have found inspiration at Coleridge Cottage. But it's not just famous names who leave their mark here. Every season, anonymous poets of all ages come through our doors, pick up a quill and share their words in our Writing Room.

From heartfelt verses to playful rhymes, the Cottage continues to be a place where creativity flourishes. We love seeing the poems our visitors leave behind, like this beautiful contribution displayed in our Writing Room.

Why not visit and add your own?

🪶And we'd love to know...

What's your favourite line of poetry? Bonus points if it's by Coleridge!

📍 Coleridge Cottage is open Wednesdays, Thursdays & Sundays, 11am-4pm (last entry 3pm).
