COMPO SAUSAGES
Sounds like something revolting from Last of The Summer W**e, doesn’t it? But for me the best thing that came out of the cold war was the Holy Grail of foods compo sausages, putty in a tin. Also known as ET fingers, or dead man’s fingers. These sausages were usually found in the four or ten-man ration packs. What would I give for a can of these right now? Perhaps the finest culinary delight the ration packs had to offer. I’ve seen grown men fight over the last COMPO sausage at breakfast.
In fact, I liked them that much I was almost tempted to sign up for 22 years. Then I tasted f**king COMPO Pilchards.
There were ten sausages in a tin. You can be sure if there was ever an odd one left it would be cut and shared to the millimetre. I remember being served up breakfast in the field one morning, usually it would be one egg, beans, slice of bacon grill and one sausage. But on this occasion, I was lucky I got an extra sausage due to one of the cooks being my drinking buddy, his nickname was Mick the Burn. Arriving back to my section with two sausages caused a deadly silence if looks could kill.
