Connecting people and wildlife across North Blackpool’s ponds and green spaces.

Managed by Groundwork with support from volunteers, the Pond Trail is a place to discover nature, explore and get involved in local conservation. The Pond Trail started life as a Natural England project part of their 'Access to Nature' programme. Now Groundwork CLM work with volunteers on the up keep and improvements for wildlife as well as people.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐠𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰?

Those striking red stems around Kincraig Lake don't just brighten up the winter landscape. Dogwood provides valuable habitat and shelter for wildlife, helping to create a richer and more diverse environment around the Pond Trail.

Tomorrow from 10am - 12.30pm we'll be carrying out some seasonal path maintenance and cutting back sections of dogwood that have started to encroach onto the footpaths. This helps keep the trail accessible for visitors while ensuring this important wildlife-friendly shrub continues to thrive.

🐸Someone's toad-ally interested in the Pond Trail! We found this little guy whilst scything an area of overgrown grass. Don't worry, he was placed safely into a patch of dense, damp ferns to go about his day.

❓Did you know toads have porous skin? It's really important to wear gloves if you have to pick them up as the chemicals on our skin can harm them!

This Thursday we're out with volunteers at Kincraig Lake clearing back some dogwood, litter picking and tidying up the paths we cleared last week. Come and join in!

A big thank you to the DWP team for joining us through the 10,000 hours volunteering initiative to uncover hidden stone edging and widen sections of the Pond Trail.

🍄‍🟫 It's Fungi season! Have you spotted any fungi on the Pond Trail this week? One of our team found this charming trooping crumble cap (Coprinellus disseminatus) around Kincraig Lake recently.

Want to come and spot your own mushrooms? This Thursday we're hosting a Fungi Walk on the Pond Trail! No experience needed, just bring yourself.

We'll be using an app called iNaturalist to help us ID and record mushrooms. It's free to use, so if you'd like to use your own phone to record sightings, then download it before the session. We have a limited number of phones to borrow if you're unable to do this 😊

Last week, we put camera traps around the hedgehog homes that we created, and we've already captured some great videos of our spiky friends (and some foxes too!) 🦊

This Thursday we’ll be tidying up the Community Orchard as it's in need of a bit of an autumn refresh. We'll be clearing brambles from under the trees, maintaining the pathways and litterpicking. Come along for a chill morning amongst the trees 🌳

What a brilliant day at the Pond Trail!

A huge thank you to everyone who came along. It was fantastic to see local residents, students from Blackpool and The Fylde College and the wider community all getting stuck in.

With all hands on deck, we created new habitats for wildlife and natural barriers to help protect these areas and encourage everyone to stick to the paths. 🌿

A special shout out to our trainee Conservation Officers Lara and Olivia, who planned and facilitated their first session. What a fantastic job!

And this is just the start…

🦔 We’ve found hedgehogs on the Pond Trail!

Our camera traps have already caught hedgehogs exploring Kincraig Lake, so now we’re getting ready for winter.

This Thursday we’ll be creating brash piles using branches, bramble, twigs and leaves to provide safe, sheltered places for hedgehogs to overwinter. They’ll also create habitat for amphibians and invertebrates. 🌿

We’ll be pruning, cutting back, building habitat and setting up the cameras again to see who moves in! 📷

🌾 Ever wondered what happens to a meadow after it’s cut?

This week at the North Pond Trail, we’re collecting hay to help create better conditions for wildflowers and wildlife. 🌼🦋

But that’s not all we get up to! Each week brings something different, from creating habitats and clearing paths to litter picking, spotting wildlife and sharing ideas for the site.

🌿 Help shape the future of the Pond Trail

This week we’re exploring another part of the trail using quadrats and citizen science, following a request from one of our regular attendees.

We’ll be recording what we find and where we find it, helping build a picture of the Pond Trail and inform future land management plans. 🌱

Citizen science might sound complicated, but don’t worry. We’re here to show you, work with you and learn alongside you.

We’ll also be clearing paths and litter picking as we go.

🌿 Pond Trail tomorrow! 🌿

We’ll be meeting at the lake for our Thursday conservation session, getting stuck into path clearing and litter picking.

We’ll also have some binoculars out for a bit of bird spotting and learning how to record what we find using iNaturalist.

Got your own binoculars? Bring them along! Never used them before? We’ll show you how.
