Blackburn Foodbank

Blackburn Foodbank A community food bank in Blackburn with Darwen providing practical support to people facing hunger.

We don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. That’s why we provide a minimum of three days’ nutritionally-balanced emergency food to local people in crisis who have been referred to us (for instance by advice agencies, GPs, social services and schools), as well as support to help people solve the crises they face. We are part of a nationwide network of food banks, suppo

rted by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty & hunger, and campaigning for change to end the need for food banks across the UK.

A sneak peak into the preparations for tomorrow's Big Volunteer Thank you!

We can't wait to celebrate this years' volunteers, share stories and see faces old and new.

We've said it many times before - but we can't do this without you 💚💚💚

We are a little late to the Volunteer Thank you party as it was Volunteers Week last week. But, our Volunteer celebrations are happening next week, which we are very excited for!

It is never enough to say a simple thank you for all the incredible work our dedicated volunteers do for us, they are the cogs in our machine, the heart of the Foodbank, and the soles on our shoes. They drive our vans, pick up the food, sort out the donations, hand out parcels, answer the phones, basically everything that keeps the foodbank ship afloat. We couldn't help the people we do without them.

💚Thank you💚

💚Thank you💚

To all our Volunteers past, present and those yet to come through the door!

Looking forward to celebrating with you next week.

We are running really short on instant essentials. The quickly grabable, less fuss, instant hot food that can be the thing you need to get through the day when life is busy and stressful.

Sometimes these types of food are the thing you need to put some warmth in your body, especially when the weather is as changeable as it is at the moment, one minute it is t-shirt weather the next it's back to your big thick jumper.

If you have some spare instant essentials in your cupboard :-

🍲Instant soup
🍚Instant rice
🍜Pot noodles
🍝Packet noodles
......and they are still in date, please consider dropping some down to us at Blackburn Foodbank or adding some extra packets in your shopping to be donated to our collection points in the local supermarkets.

Every little helps! 💚💚 We can't do this without you 💚💚

Thank you for your support

Food waste is always is a problem at the Foodbank, we often get pastries and bread that is close to it's use by date and fruit and veg that are bruised and battered. Our food waste bin is often 'fuller than it should be'

Meet Jimmy and John, our waste hero's (not all hero's wear capes!) They have a joint venture raising pigs on their family farm and have swooped in to help our food waste issue. They now collect any out of date bread/cakes/fruit/veg from us and in return we even get a sack of potato's to help us help others.

This is kindness in action! It's pig-tastic! We are overjoyed that the pigs are happy!

Meet Matt, from Caritas!

Helping people is at the heart of everything I do. Whether it's offering practical support at the Foodbank, helping someone reduce their energy bills, or providing guidance through difficult times, making a difference in people's lives is what motivates me every day.

I have been part of the Foodbank team for just over a year and can usually be found here on Mondays and Fridays from 10am until 2pm when the Foodbank is open.

My role is Foodbank Chaplain, but I also run an energy support drop-in service. This means that when people come to collect their food parcel and need a little extra help, I can offer practical advice and support to help make life more affordable.

Some of the ways I can help include:

💷Saving money on household bills
🪫Improving energy efficiency at home
🍄‍🟫Advice and support for damp and mould issues
💷Ongoing support for those affected by the cost of living crisis
⛽Access to gas and electricity vouchers for people using pre-payment meters

The energy vouchers are worth £49 each and are available up to six times per year. They can be claimed one month apart and provide valuable support, particularly during the colder winter months when energy costs can be at their highest.

The best part of my role is helping people. I have the privilege of seeing lives change, and being even a small part of someone’s journey is incredibly rewarding. Supporting people to improve their finances and reduce financial pressures can have a huge impact on their day-to-day lives, and it's wonderful to see the difference that makes.

I also love being part of the wider Foodbank family. There is so much fantastic work happening every day, and it is a privilege to work alongside such a dedicated team. Knowing that we are making a genuine difference in our community makes every day worthwhile.

Young people are being failed by the very systems meant to support them - education, health and social security.

❗ In five years, 1.25 MILLION young people could be out of work or training if no action is taken.

Sky-high rents, low incomes from wages and social security, and a lack of mental health support are pushing young people to food banks - and making it even harder for them to access work or training.

But it doesn't have to be this way.

Investing in young people is an investment in our country and a future without the need for food banks. The UK government MUST act

🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪 Happy National Biscuit Day! 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪

Everyone likes a brew and a biscuit, it's sometimes a little bit of sweet relief during a stressful period, sometimes it a bit of a energy to get us through the afternoon slump, but always a little treat.

Here's a little 'biscuit' history:-

🍪1365 First Recorded Use of “Biscuit” in English

The Middle English word “bisket,” derived from Old French “bescuit” and Latin “bis coctus” (twice cooked), appears in records to describe hard, dry baked goods suitable for storage.

🍪1883 McVitie’s Begins Baking Digestive Biscuits in Scotland

Scottish baker Robert McVitie’s firm starts producing digestive biscuits, which soon become a popular semi-sweet “health” biscuit and a classic companion to tea in Britain.

Biscuits are a family staple in the UK and here in Blackburn is no different. Sadly, the Foodbank's biscuit shelves are almost empty and we are asking if anyone has any biscuits you could donate? Your kindness could put a smile on the faces of a family or help to provide a tiny bit of sweet relief to someone facing crisis.

Ways to donate:-

🍪 Drop your donation into the Foodbank
🍪 Add a packet into our collection points in the local supermarkets.

We cannot thank you enough for your continued kindness and support. We can't do this without you!

How is everyone holding up in the scorching heat this half term? Phew… it’s definitely been a HOT one this week in Blackburn! ☀️🥵

If you have been looking after little ones during the heatwave, remember to keep everyone topped up with water, slap on the sun cream, and don’t feel guilty if tea ends up being ice lollies and picky bits in the garden this week 🍦

We also know the school holidays and warmer weather can put extra pressure on family budgets, so we wanted to share a few places offering children’s meals for £1 or free to help families stretch things a little further ❤️

Please check directly with venues before travelling as offers can change.

Most importantly — look after yourselves, check in on neighbours and loved ones, and remember that support is always available if you need it.

From all of us at Blackburn Foodbank 💚

P.S. One very kind person just dropped by with ice lollies for us all to keep us cool whilst we cook at our desks. People are so kind and we are so grateful for all the generosity we receive that helps us keep going.
