Thanks to everyone who supported our open days event.
Lisa Clarke, Coordinator at The Exchange Blackburn, said:
“We had an amazing and incredibly successful day. It was wonderful to see so many people come through the doors, particularly given the weather. The response from visitors was fantastic, and it was especially lovely to hear their memories and personal connections to The Exchange. Our volunteers and tour guide worked incredibly hard to make the day such a success, and we’re delighted with the feedback we received.”
Visitors were able to explore the Lounge, which had been transformed into a celebration of Blackburn’s Victorian heritage. Displays included historic photographs, a police uniform and handcuffs, alongside books covering the history of Blackburn and the Victorian era.
The popular photo booth provided visitors with the chance to dress up in Victorian-style clothing and capture their own photographs. It proved to be a particular favourite, allowing visitors of all ages to enjoy the experience while learning more about the period.
Volunteers Matt and Eric were on hand throughout the day to welcome visitors, offer advice and provide fascinating insights into the building and its history.
The Exchange’s volunteers also took to the streets in pairs, dressed in Victorian costume and distributing information.
Archivist and author, Chris Walton delivered a series of inspiring and engaging guided tours. The conversations generated during the tours also provided valuable ideas about what the public would like to see happening at The Exchange in the future.
MeeMaws was open throughout the day, featuring historic newspaper clippings and postcards for visitors to browse. Historian and co-author, Howard Foy was also available to meet guests and chat about the history of the area.
MeeMaws was specially decorated for the occasion and served a selection of traditional treats, including Victorian Sponge Sandwich, Battenberg and cupcakes, kindly donated by Annie Collier of BWD Food Alliance.
Lisa Clarke added:
“One of the most rewarding parts of the day was hearing people share their own memories and experiences of the building. Heritage is about more than bricks and mortar — it’s about the people, stories and memories that bring a place to life. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who visited, volunteered, supported the event or helped spread the word. We look forward to building on this success and welcoming people back to The Exchange.”
