The Iraq War – Operation TELIC – 15TH Anniversary

Men and women of our Armed Forces joined the US led Coalition in the invasion of Iraq in March 2002.The last British personnel departed on 22nd May 2011 and Operation TELIC was finally at an end

Tragically 179 British Armed Forces Personnel lost their lives. Thousands more were wounded, many with life-changing physical injuries while others experienced emotional or mental ill health

A short commemoration was held at Bishop’s Stortford War Memorial at 11am on Sunday 24th May 2026 to remember the 15th Anniversary of the end of the Iraq War and honour the extraordinary service and sacrifice of the British Armed Forces involved.

This was led by Bishop’s Stortford RBL Branch President John B Robinson. Those in attendance included Veterans, Branch Committee Members and the Town Mayor Cllr Martin Adams. The Branch Standard was carried by Zoe Maidment and Army Veteran Mark Thornewill laid a wreath.

“My granny was born in 1910 and had amazing memories of both World Wars as well as the Swinging Sixties. I wish I had recorded her, because her voice and manner were so distinctive. I just can’t get that across to my own children who never met her.”

So says Bishop’s Stortford filmmaker Esther McWatters, who has co-launched a new business making personal documentaries with individuals and families to preserve their memories, voices and life stories for future generations

The service and sacrifice of British personnel in Afghanistan cannot be called into question, and we condemn any comments that undermine their extraordinary contribution. 457 British personnel lost their lives in Afghanistan and thousands more and their families now live with the lifelong physical and mental impact from service in that conflict.

The dedication and sacrifices of the men and women in the British Armed Forces from the UK, Commonwealth, and beyond, to protect our freedoms and support our allies deserves our deep and ongoing respect and gratitude.

Our nation’s support for our Armed Forces is never in doubt. The Royal British Legion through our ongoing work to recognise, remember, and support the Armed Forces community, ensures that their unique contribution is not forgotten. This recognition is shared across communities, cultures, and faiths. If you have been affected by current events in the news, please do not hesitate to contact us at the branch or on 0808 802 8080.
