The 27th Graham Greene International Festival is taking place September 24-27, 2026

Did you know that Berkhamsted is Greene's birthplace?

This year there is an incredibly exciting and varied selection of speakers taking on many shades of Greene.

First launched in 1998, the festival is held each autumn close to Greene’s birthday, 2 October (1904). Across four days, Greene’s life and work is celebrated in a warm, welcoming and inclusive event. This year our speakers range from well-known Greene admirers to broadcasters, playwrights, journalists, novelists, film-makers, scholars, young researchers and straightforward fans and admirers.

An Audience with Captain John Tye

The David Pearce Memorial Lecture was started last year in memory of our dear departed churchwarden and Berkhamsted schoolmaster. It is run by the Friends of St Peter's in partnership with Berkhamsted School, and this year's event is a fundraiser for the St Peter's Renovation Appeal, supporting our urgent ongoing roof repairs.

This year the Friends welcome BA Concorde pilot Captain John Tye as speaker. John will explain technical features of Concorde and take us on a virtual flight from Heathrow to New York. There will be a Q&A session and an opportunity to purchase a signed copy of his best-selling book, Life of a Concorde Pilot - From the Orphanage to the Edge of Space.

Tickets are £15 and include a complimentary drink on arrival (£5 for under-18s and students). All ticket holders will also be entitled to a year's membership of the Friends of St Peter's. Centenary Theatre, Kings Road, drinks from 7pm. Don't miss this - and invite your friends and neighbours, and support this vital appeal! Book online to secure a ticket.

There will be a local screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing film, focusing on the risks to British life from ongoing damage to nature and to our climate.

· Location: St Peter’s Church, Berkhamsted

· Date: 23 September 2026

· Time: 7:00 pm

The film features footage from last November’s National Emergency Briefing, which brought together leading UK experts in climate science, food security, health, economics, national security, and nature. It presents a clear, measured overview of how the climate and nature crisis is affecting everyday life in Britain, and what the evidence says about risks and responses.

The initiative is explicitly non-partisan and is supported by a wide range of organisations, including the National Trust, Church of England, Exeter University, the Royal Meteorological Society, WWF, and many more.

These issues are not abstract. They increasingly intersect with local planning, the preservation of our green spaces, infrastructure resilience, and the overall well-being of Berkhamsted's residents.

The purpose of the Briefing is to support informed democratic discussion and ensure that public institutions, community groups, and residents share a common understanding of the scale and urgency of the challenge.

Following the film, we will host a short, structured local discussion focused on what this means for our town—including local resilience, environmental protection, and forward planning for Berkhamsted.
