From keeping our streets clean to protecting local green spaces, public service workers play a huge role in Barnsley’s environment.

This World Environment Day, we’re celebrating their work - and calling for the resources they need to keep our communities healthy and green. 💚

Many members have raised concerns after reports that a newly elected councillor had a sw****ka tattoo, which he says relates to a past interest in Buddhism. We understand how upsetting this is. The sw****ka is a symbol that has caused immense harm, and its appearance in public life is distressing for many.

Barnsley UNISON stands firmly for equality, dignity and respect at work. Those values guide everything we do. We are seeking urgent assurances from the Council about how they will uphold their responsibilities around equality and inclusion, and we will keep members updated.

Mileage rate rise will be welcomed by UNISON members after being stuck at the same rate for 15 years

Mileage rate rise from HMRC is a win for workers — won by our members.

“UNISON has campaigned hard for this long overdue change,” Andrea Egan, UNISON general secretary

“Workers who use their own cars to do their job have been left thousands of pounds out of pocket for far too many years”.

“This simple measure will provide immediate help for countless frontline workers in public services. Particularly at a time when living costs are going through the roof again.”

“There’s still more to do to ensure no one is losing out and the union will continue to campaign for more over the coming months.”

UNISON GS on the announcement that the chancellor is raising the mileage rate by 10p a mile.

𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗦𝗢𝗡 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘆: 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗬𝗼𝘂, 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀

Following the recent local elections and the resulting political changes within Barnsley Council, we know many of you may be feeling uncertain about what this means for your jobs, your services, and your working lives. Change at the political level can naturally raise questions, but we want to reassure every member that UNISON’s commitment to you remains exactly the same.

Your terms and conditions, your rights at work, and the protections you rely on do not change because the political leadership changes. UNISON continues to be one of the recognised trade unions for Barnsley Council staff, and we will remain at the table—constructive, firm, and vocal—on every issue that affects you.

Over the coming weeks, we will:
• Seek early meetings with the new leadership to set out our priorities and expectations on behalf of members.
• Defend jobs, services, and fair working practices, regardless of the political makeup of the council.
• Keep you informed about any developments that may affect your workplace or service area.
• Stand together to ensure that any proposed changes are fair, transparent, and properly consulted on.

UNISON has been through many political cycles in local government, and one thing has always remained true: when we act collectively, we protect each other. Whatever direction the new administration takes, we will continue to challenge anything that threatens your rights and champion anything that strengthens your working environment. If you have concerns, please speak to your local steward or branch office. No member should feel they have to navigate uncertainty alone.
