October 24th is World Polio Awareness day and we are so lucky to have businesses in Barney ready to turn their buildings purple to spread the message 💜 Rotary International has worked to end polio for more than 40 years and collectively have protected more than 3 billion children worldwide from Polio. 💜💜💜

A wonderful talk this evening from our own Rotarian, Marjorie, on The Prelude by William Wordsworth. Sharing the poem due to the group's love of the lakes and Marjorie's background as an English teacher got everyone talking about their own favourite poetry and how interesting the breakdown of the passage by Marjorie was. Thank you Marjorie for a thoroughly interesting talk which was enjoyed by the whole club!

St Mary’s Community Choir Concert this month was a great success! This included Deerbolt Ladies Singers joining for a couple of songs. The profit of nearly £500 from the joint venture is to be divided between the Church and Barnard Castle Rotary with our share going to Teesdale Citizen’s Advice Bureau! Photographs show the choir which included Rotarians Marjorie Bedwell and Pauline Loughran-Hanby and Friend of Rotary Hazel Yeadon; Rotary President Ivor Stolliday giving thanks; and Rotarians Ruth Stables and Barry Phillips who did sterling work tidying up at the end! Thank you to all involved.

Rotary Barnard Castle is at Morrisons until 4.30 today collecting money for The Rotary Toy Box appeal. This is a fund to buy Christmas gifts for children in domestic violence refuges who otherwise wouldn't receive gifts this year. Please pop along and donate if you can ❤️🎄

In August two young people from the local area were sponsored by Barnard Castle Rotary Club to attend Rotary Youth Leadership award which is an intensive leadership training program for young people to help participants build communication, problem-solving, and team-management skills. They spent 5 days at an outdoor residential camp (Wilderness Outdoor Education Centre) completing practical team challenges and outdoor tasks. This included solving challenges such as safely transporting Polio vaccine and relocating a shelterbox. They learned about the wider aims of Rotary to offer support at a local, national and international level. The participants then presented a summary of their experience to the club and will attend a celebration dinner in Gateshead.
Barnard Castle Rotary are very proud of the achievements of our two candidates this year!

Today we had our charter celebration in a slightly different shape than normal. We had an absolutely wonderful day with Rotarians, friends and family exploring the history of the village of Romaldkirk through the personal stories of the past residents. With a fascinating talk by our fellow Rotarian, Gerald, we explored the symbolism and stories of those buried in Romaldkirk church yard - thank you so much Gerald, thoroughly enjoyed by all! Then we had an exceptional afternoon tea at Romaldkirk reading room. What a beautiful day for it and thank you to everyone involved.

At our last Rotary speaker meeting we were joined by Andy Mudd BEM on behalf of BLESMA. A Veteran formerly 22 years in the Royal Military Police who was blown up by the IRA in Colchester late in 1989. Since then has been a staunch member, Branch Chairman and Trustee at the National Military Charity BLESMA. The limbless ex service men and women association. The charity was formally started in 1932 and primarily brought injured servicemen together to talk of their injuries and ways to cope. Many branches were formed across the country. Now Welfare , prosthetics and activities are part of the daily goings on of this excellent charity. Thank you so much to Andy for joining us and for the fascinating talk about the amazing work BLESMA carry out.

Year 6 leavers at schools around Teesdale received their Thesaurus last week from Friend of Rotary, Pete Harding, on behalf of Rotary Barnard Castle. Well done to all the primary children for their achievements and all the best on your next adventure in secondary school
