Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Craig Blaney, has officially unveiled Bangor's newest public mural, funded through The Executive Office's Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (EVAWG) Strategy.

Located in a prominent city-centre location, the mural carries the powerful message "Girls Just Wanna... Walk Home", highlighting the right of women and girls to feel safe in public spaces.

The artwork was created by local street artist Friz, in collaboration with the Council, North Down YMCA and the young women participating in the YMCA's Flip the Script programme, whose experiences and perspectives helped shape the final design.

🙌 A mural highlighting the right of women and girls to feel safe in public spaces has been unveiled this week.

Ards and North Down Mayor Craig Blaney did the official honours for the artwork entitled 'Girls Just Wanna... Walk Home' located on Bangor city centre's Hamilton Road.

The composition was created by local street artist Friz, in collaboration with the council, North Down YMCA and the young women participating in the YMCA’s “Flip the Script” programme, whose experiences and perspectives helped shape the final design.

Flip the Script say their programme provides young women with a platform to “share their experiences, explore issues that affect their lives and become advocates for positive change.”

The Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Craig Blaney said: “This mural carries a simple but powerful message: every woman and girl should be able to walk home without fear of harassment, intimidation or violence.

“By placing this artwork in a prominent location, we hope it will encourage people to stop, reflect and talk about the realities many women and girls continue to face. The young women involved in this project have created a thought-provoking piece that uses art to raise awareness and inspire positive change.

“Ending Violence Against Women and Girls is a shared responsibility, and creating safer communities requires all of us to play our part."

A few months ago our previous E2T group used the opportunity of their social action project to raise money for Ards and north down Women’s Aid.
In total they raised £385.47 and used the donations to purchase all items photographed below.

We welcomed Janine and Elaine from Ards and north down Women’s Aid in today to collect our young people’s donation.

A massive thank you to the Bowtown Community Development Group for donating some beauty and self care items.

As always, we are extremely proud of all the young people involved💜

🍔 COMMUNITY LUNCH – BBQ STYLE! 🍔🌭

We’re planning a fun BBQ-style Community Lunch tomorrow (Monday) at 12pm! 🎉

📍 The plan is Ward Park, but unfortunately the weather doesn’t seem to be on our side at the minute! 🌧️☔

👀 Please keep your eyes peeled on our page tomorrow for an update, as we may have to move Community Lunch to its original spot at the YMCA building 10-12 High Street Bangor.

But wherever we end up, the weather won’t spoil our fun! 🙌 We’ll still be bringing the BBQ theme, along with:

🎶 Music
🎯 Games
🍔 Tasty food
😂 Plenty of laughs
❤️ And great company, as always!

Come along, bring your appetite and join us for another brilliant Community Lunch. Ward Park or YMCA the BBQ fun is still ON! 🌭🎉

See you tomorrow at 12pm! 👋
