The Clogwyn Centre is ideally located for adventurous activities to suit all age ranges of Scouts or Guides. The building can accommodate 36 in its comfortable bunk rooms. It is close to the motorway network and 10 mins walk from Bangor railway station – making it super easy to get to. There’s plenty to do right on the doorstep: Canoe in the harbour, pay a visit to our next door neighbours – Penrhyn Castle, make a splash in the local swimming pool or pick up the National cycle way which passes our front door. Aber Falls is within walking distance and the stunning mountains of Snowdonia and spectacular beaches on Anglesey are within easy driving distance.
The building makes a great base to venture out in the national park and is a welcome and cosy reprieve to return to if the weather has been bad. There’s plenty to do nearby whether its Hillwalking, Climbing, Sailing, Canoeing, Mountain Biking, Windsurfing, Tobogganing, Beach Combing, Fossil Hunting, Photography. You can even hitch a ride on Europe’s longest and fastest zip wires in or jump around on a subterranean trampoline at Bounce Below!
The facilities such as the large conference room, lounge area, separate kitchenette and climbing wall also make it a perfect venue for both residential and daytime Adult Training. Whether as a base for mountain leader training, water permits on the straits, doing a climbing wall permit or a REC First Aid Course; Clogwyn is a great place for Adults in the movement to stay too!
The building was originally a slate processing facility on the Penrhyn estate. The Centre has much to owe to pioneer Alan Hull (Venture Scout Leader) who had the foresight to establish it as a base for Venture Scouts from the then North West Cheshire District. After the merger of Widnes and NWC districts to form Mersey Weaver and the amalgamation of Explorer Scouts as a district provision, the well loved activity centre is now managed by Mike Walker and Pat Moran on behalf of Mersey Weaver. Along with our Queen Charlotte’s Wood Activity centre it is a treasure and continues to create life long memories for countless young people.
