More than half of UK train stations are still failing on basic safety measures.

Our recent investigation – the Railway Station Safety Survey – has revealed:
🚫 55% lack visible security.
🚫 Only 1 in 10 are staffed at all times.
🚫 1/3 have no emergency help point.
🚫 Poorly lit and isolated car parks remain common.

“These key measures, which can help women feel more secure, remain inconsistent, patchy and mixed at best. This leaves women increasingly vulnerable when travelling by train,” says Soroptimist SIGBI President Gillie O'Rourke.

SIGBI’s Programme Director, Lindsay Green,added: “Our goal is to stand up for women and girls, advocating for equal rights, opportunities, and representation. The relaunch of our railway safety project has been key in advancing this important issue and bringing it to the forefront of policy makers’ agendas.”

It was a joy and privilege to deliver Child Exploitation awareness training to newly qualified social workers alongside experienced staff from different services within 'sTrust as part of my role as a national trainer with Life Training.
In addition to gaining an understanding of the different aspects of child exploitation, a key issue that was sincerely appreciated was the importance of language as reaffirmed by Language Matters by ’s and Child exploitation and abuse: an appropriate language guide by Children’s Society. We need to remember the words we use are fundamental in the process of building a positive relationship with a child or young person who may be a victim of child sexual exploitation, child criminal exploitation and county lines independently or inclusively.

Trust, empowerment and the voice of the child are crucial components of contextual safeguarding alongside strong multi-agency partnerships with disruption strategies and a holistic approach.

During the training day I promoted the new County Lines Co-ordination Centre and Stoppers reporting site and shared appropriately selected details from the Crime and Policing Act 2026. I also highlighted SafeCall from People, a confidential helpline for children and young people which was one of many identified resources, positive interventions and support strategies for children, young people, families and professionals.
