Aylesbury Homeless Action Group Aylesbury Homeless Action Group (AHAG) works towards reducing the impact of homelessness & insecure housing.

The ‘Hub’ drop in centre was initiated in 2009 as a pilot scheme to identify the need within Aylesbury. This was open for 3 hours per day for three days a week. Once the need had been clearly proven we have included the Hub as a key part of our strategy for engaging those people who are homeless or facing homelessness. Since 2012, the charity was fortunate to be able to secure its own premises on Rickfords Hill. This has enabled us to offer one to one support by appointment. We also have a training room giving people access to computers and phones to assist those looking for housing, employment and education. We have also offered emergency accommodation for the past five years during the winter period. This was started initially in partnership with local churches. Since 2014 we had access to a single venue which was generously provided by Aylesbury Vale District Council. The charity has grown in size since 2009 and we currently employ six part time staff. We also are reliant on our volunteers who underpin the work that we do. Many of those have remained with the charity since 2009.

If you had visited Waddesdon Manor over summer you may have found the opportunity to name a creature in the Wild Wood Adventure playground.
We are delighted to share that "Leggy Lenny" now has his forever name in his forever home, courtesy of Daniel who came up with the great name and entered the free prize draw.
We are so proud to be working alongside the Rothschild Foundation creating imaginative ideas to raise awareness and funds for our small charity.
Thank you to everyone involved.

... the picture became even clearer — and even more worrying...

Marin* arrived at our door in April carrying little more than a small backpack and the huge shock of what had just happened. Their stepfather had forced them out of the house after months of escalating emotional abuse. With their mum in temporary accommodation after fleeing the same man, Marin suddenly had nowhere safe to go.

Despite everything, Marin was still trying to hold onto their part time job, but it wasn’t enough income to secure a place to live. They’d already been told they wouldn’t be offered emergency accommodation. The fear of having nowhere safe to sleep was very real. For now, sofa surfing was their only option, as it was safe and gave them time to figure out what to do next, a task that felt physically and emotionally impossible at that point.
We were able to respond instantly at that first drop-in, providing details of specialist domestic abuse support and encouraging them to access that support straight away.

A few days later when Marin came back for their assessment appointment with us, the picture became even clearer — and even more worrying. They were being financially controlled by their stepfather, and their mental health was rapidly deteriorating under the strain. They wanted counselling but didn’t know how to access it.

We stepped in. Marin was referred to emergency supported accommodation and to a mental health charity, and we began advocating directly with the council. We explained that Marin was fleeing domestic abuse and needed somewhere safe urgently. Marin was placed in temporary accommodation, overturning the previous refusal.

For the next month, Marin worked hard to rebuild some stability. They wanted to move on from temporary accommodation and start again somewhere permanent. Our mental health specialist worked through pros and cons of the options that had been offered - supported accommodation or a direct let, this helped Marin to understand their options better.

Marin chose the direct let — a chance at a home of their own. During a finance session with us and having left the finically abusive household, it was established that the rent was manageable, but the upfront payment was impossible for them to afford. We asked Marin to bring us the tenancy agreement so we could help. Once they did, we funded the advance rent payment, and Marin signed the tenancy with relief and pride. They moved into their new home shortly afterwards.

Today, Marin is settling in. They receive weekly mental health support and have now started counselling. We provided a starter pack — a microwave, kettle, air fryer, pots and pans — along with an Aldi voucher to help them get through the first few weeks.
Their flat is set up, warm, and most importantly - safe and away from abuse.

Marin’s journey shows how quickly a young person can fall into crisis — and how transformative the right support can be.

…… then things got even harder…...

When Ben* first came to us a year ago, a young man not even 25 years old, he was exhausted, and completely overwhelmed. A breakdown at home meant he was suddenly rough sleeping and sofa surfing. His mental health had spiralled, and he was struggling to keep work going.

We helped him get the documents he needed to the council, supported him to apply for Universal Credit, and made sure the council understood how urgent his situation was. He was placed into temporary accommodation — and for a while, things seemed stable.

But - ten months later, Ben walked back through our door. Back rough sleeping. Back sofa surfing. Still trying his best.

We talked about his mental health, substance use, and what he wanted for his future. He told us he wanted, and he knew he needed, supported accommodation — somewhere structured, safe and designed for young people like him, with actual support on hand. Appropriate accommodation like this takes time. We booked appointments, completed referrals together, and made sure he had food while we waited for the wheels to turn.

His engagement wasn’t perfect. He missed an important appointment for supported accommodation and Ben was terrified he’d blown his chance. But he owned it, apologised, and kept trying. We reassured him that he hadn’t lost his opportunity — he just needed to show up, consistently and with purpose.

Then things got even harder. Ben suffered a seizure and was admitted to hospital. We advocated for him with the council, making sure they understood how urgent his housing situation had become. He was placed back into temporary accommodation the same day he was discharged from hospital, whilst we applied for the supported accommodation he needed.

A few days later, another seizure. Another ambulance.

Five days after the second seizure — a breakthrough. Ben was offered an assessment for supported accommodation, and we went with him. He smashed it. He walked out hopeful for the first time in over a year.

Shortly after, he was offered a room. A safe place. A fresh start. With support.

We helped him prepare for the move, arranged white goods, and provided a £50 Aldi voucher. We handed over everything to his new key worker so he can continue getting the support he needs.

💙 Ben is now settling into his new home and rebuilding his life with dignity.💚

This year YOU can play a part in supporting people facing homelessness right here in our town and surrounding villages.

By signing up to give a regular £5 donation — annually, quarterly or monthly — you help build the stable foundation small charities like ours rely on. Regular gifts allow us to plan ahead, strengthen our services, and support the hundreds of people who turn to us every year. Our aim is always to secure safe, suitable accommodation before anyone has to consider sleeping in a car or on the streets.

So far this year, we have supported over 500 individuals and families to find safe, secure housing — and we continue to work with many more every week.

On World Homeless Day, be part of a global movement that highlights a growing issue happening right here at home.

World Homeless Day emerged from online discussions between people responding to homelessness across the world. Since its founding, it has been marked on every continent (except Antarctica) and in over 100 countries.

Your £5 could be part of something powerful — global awareness, local action, real change.

Earlier this week, we were privileged to join the Mayor of Aylesbury at a whole school assembly at Turnfurlong Junior School — invited as a follow‑up to the children’s growing interest in homelessness after hearing Andy Burnham’s pledge.

Standing in front of a sea of engaged, curious and outward‑looking young people was a genuine privilege. Their questions showed not only compassion, but a real desire to understand how their actions can make a difference. Yes, a simple smile really can make someone feel seen.

We were asked things like:
“What does thrive mean?”
“Do you help people all across the world?”
“I thought people had a right to a safe home?”

Powerful questions from thoughtful young members of our community.

This conversation is all part of our Five to Thrive programme — asking supporters to give a regular £5 donation (monthly, quarterly or annually). Your steady support becomes part of the foundation of our charity, enabling us to help people today so they can thrive tomorrow, knowing they have somewhere safe to sleep tonight.

Thank you to Turnfurlong Junior School for welcoming us so warmly.
