Breaking the Silence on Drug Abuse: YAGYDI Marks International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
Drug abuse remains one of the most pressing public health and social challenges affecting young people and communities worldwide. From substance dependency and mental health complications to increased crime rates and reduced productivity, the impact extends beyond individuals to families and communities.
Recognizing the need for increased awareness and prevention, the Young and Gifted Youth Development Initiative (YAGYDI) commemorated the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking through a community sensitization and awareness campaign held at Government Day Secondary School (GDSS), Gaa Akanbi, Ilorin, Kwara State.
Theme: World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses.
The growing rate of substance misuse among young people highlights the importance of prevention through education, awareness, and community engagement. Many young people face exposure to drugs due to peer pressure, misinformation, social influences, and limited access to preventive information.
YAGYDI believes that informed young people are better equipped to make responsible choices and become positive contributors to society.
As part of the awareness campaign, YAGYDI engaged students and community members in discussions focused on:
✅ Understanding drug abuse and substance misuse
✅ Identifying the risks and consequences of illicit drug use
✅ The impact of drug abuse on education, health, relationships, and future opportunities
✅ Strategies for resisting peer pressure
✅ The importance of making healthy lifestyle choices
✅ Encouraging young people to become advocates for drug-free communities
The session provided participants with accurate information, practical guidance, and an opportunity to ask questions in a safe learning environment.
The outreach created an important platform for open conversations about substance abuse and its effects on individuals and society.
Participants demonstrated a strong interest in learning about the dangers associated with drug misuse and the role they can play in promoting healthy behaviours among their peers.
Through education and awareness, YAGYDI contributed to building a generation that is more informed, resilient, and empowered to make positive life decisions.
One of the key lessons from this campaign is that awareness remains one of the strongest tools in the fight against drug abuse.
Young people want credible information, trusted mentors, and safe spaces to discuss issues that affect their lives. Community-based awareness programs continue to play a vital role in preventing substance abuse before it begins.
