Today I visited the Ashford Freeshop following the criticism and social media attacks directed at its volunteers yesterday after they had to make the decision not to accept any more donations this week.
I think there's a word here that some people have overlooked: **VOLUNTEERS.**
These are people who freely give up their own time to make a difference in our community. They aren't paid staff, they aren't an endless resource, and they certainly don't deserve to be on the receiving end of abuse for making what is sometimes a necessary decision.
Just like any charity shop, there are times when you simply have to say no to more donations.
The last time I visited the Freeshop, it was looking more like a chaotic jumble sale than a shop! Bags of donations were stacked several high, and the sheer volume was making it a challenge to navigate the walkways safely.
There comes a point when enough is enough, and the team needs time and space to sort through what they already have to keep everyone safe.
Today, I made a point of personally thanking every volunteer I saw for everything they do. More importantly, I wanted them to know that those criticising them online are very much in the minority.
**You are seen. You are valued. You are appreciated.**
And to those who are quick to hide behind their keyboards and criticise people who are giving up their free time, here's my challenge:
Give up an afternoon of your own time. Go and volunteer. Roll up your sleeves, help sort through donations, serve the community and see things from the other side of the counter.
It's very easy to criticise when you're not the one doing the work.
To all the volunteers at Ashford Freeshop, and all other charity shops in Ashford: thank you. Thank you for your time, your kindness and your commitment to helping others in our community.
Please don't let a handful of negative voices overshadow the difference you make.
**Ashford is lucky to have you. ❤️**
