We will close at 3pm (last entry at 2pm) on Wednesday 24 June and Thursday 25 June, due to the extreme weather forecast. Our Wetland Discovery Boat Safaris will be suspended on both dates.

We have made this decision to protect the health and wellbeing of our staff and visitors during this period of extreme heat.

Wetlands can act as a shield against extreme weather events, including heat waves, providing protection for both people and for wildlife. So, we will remain open during the cooler part of the day, so you can enjoy our wetlands responsibly and our staff can carry out their essential duties, caring for our animals and managing our reserves.

However, the Met Office has issued a red warning for extreme heat, with temperatures building through the day. For the safety of everyone who works at and visits our site, we will close at 3pm (last entry 2pm).

To ensure our team stay safe while providing our species with great care during the hot weather, you might notice fewer team members across the site.

We saw at least 5 little egret youngsters last week in the nesting area between the Sand Martin and Ramsar hide. Here an adult is perched up with a trio of youngsters.

✨ Now flowering at WWT Arundel: Meadowsweet ✨
Take a wander through our wetlands this month and you’ll spot (and smell!) the beautiful meadowsweet in bloom. Its frothy clusters of creamy-white flowers fill the air with a sweet, vanilla-like scent 🌼
This stunning wildflower thrives in our damp meadows and has quite the history — it was once scattered on floors as a “strewing herb” to release its fragrance when walked on, and was even a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I 👑
Keep an eye out along the paths and waterways — it’s one of the true scents of early summer in the wetlands.

The Arundel Farmers Market is in town this morning, so if you’re visiting, we recommend coming into the centre via The Causeway roundabout due to road closures 🚧

While you’re here, why not make a morning of it? Come and ride the boats, enjoy a bit of pond dipping, or simply relax and watch the delightful sand martin families 🐦💛

Thanks Andy burns and Mike Jerome for the photos.

Between the Ramsar and Sand Martin hides is a patch of trees where egrets roost in winter and nest in spring/summer.

This little egret is in the “nesty tree”, caring for three chicks. It always looks a bit precarious, balancing on thin branches in a messy twig nest but it seems to work.

Thanks volunteer Andy Burns for this video clip - from a great distance away.

Father’s Day is coming up on Sunday 21 June. We've got gift ideas in our WWT shop including a half-price offer on some men’s socks and a new range of beers. We’ve also introduced a new local supplier, Langham Brewery, based in the South Downs National Park near Petworth. Their award-winning beers—South Downs Bitter, Hip Hop Golden Ale and Voyager Lager—are now available and are a great addition alongside the already popular Arundel Brewery range.
