This frightful day may only come round once a year, but in some parts of the cosmos it’s always spooky season. 👻🦇

The Skull Nebula, also known as NGC 246, is a planetary nebula in the constellation Cetus around 1,600 light-years away.

Discovered by William Herschel, and captured by ESO’s Very Large Telescope, the nebula formed when a dying star expelled its outer layers leaving behind its core, which is one of the two stars in the centre... Spooky👻

When did you last experience a starry night sky?

Join us on Saturday 7 November for a unique, inclusive, and participatory event focusing on artificial light at night and light pollution, organised and led by Dr Conor Heaney (Kent Law School) in collaboration with the arts and culture organisation ATLA.

This event will offer a documentary film premiere, a series of accessible exploratory activities, and facilitated talks, to learn and discuss together what future we want for our night skies in Ireland.

Event is free and will run from 1.30pm – 6pm.

This event is part of and supported by the Being Human Festival 2026.

There’s a Full Moon coming! 🌕

This month’s Full Moon is also known as the ‘Hunter’s Moon’ because many moons ago (see what we did there 😉) game animals would be fattened, and it would be time to start preparing for the coming winter. Traditionally, this included hunting and preserving meats for use in the coming winter months.

The Full Moon will be most visible at 4:12 Monday morning but you will be able to see it tonight!
