Rotary Club of Suva Fiji’s oldest and largest Rotary chapter. Established with the very same ideals and mission as Rotary International and its founding charter.

Weekly Meetings 🌿

11.06.26

Last week, our club had the pleasure of hosting the Chairman of the Insurance Association of Fiji, Mr Avinesh Raju.

Mr Raju is a prominent businessman and investor who serves as Executive Director of Fiji Care.
He is the founder and managing director of the Mount Sophia Group, a private investment company with interests in insurance, healthcare, real estate, and technology. Although based in Singapore, he was born in Fiji and has focused significant investments in Fiji over the past several years so it’s always nice to be in touch with one of our own on these platforms.

It was incredible for our members to see the growth of insurance companies and premiums on market level in Fiji today compared to what it was like pre-pandemic.

Thank you again for dropping by Mr Raju!

Here at the Rotary Club of Suva, we’ve established great friendships along the way. We had the opportunity to host a friend of RCS, Mr Yogesh Karan to our weekly luncheon.

Mr Karan is a senior Fijian civil servant and a senior diplomat who served as Fijis High Commissioner to India. During this period, he worked on strengthening diplomatic, trade, investment, and development relationships between Fiji and Asian nations. Later, became PS for several important ministries.

Now, he serves at FPSP, Fiji Program Support Platform, a major Australian Government development program funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). It is part of Australia's aid partnership with Fiji under the Fiji–Australia Vuvale Partnership to which our members received incredible insight about the support programs in health, education and social infrastructure.

We had the great honour of hosting H.E Gregory Andrew’s — Greg Andrews is New Zealand’s High Commissioner to the Republic of Fiji.

Mr Andrews has held a range of senior positions at the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT). Most recently, he served as the Divisional Manager of MFAT’s Pacific Melanesia and Micronesia Division, which oversees New Zealand’s bilateral relationships and International Development Cooperation programmes with Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Kiribati, Nauru, Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau.

Our club was grateful to hear firsthand about diplomatic relations, changes in current affairs and all things in between Fiji and New Zealand.

Vinaka to our club member, Sam Cox for linking this dialogue.

Weekly Meeting 🌿

This week our club had the great pleasure of having Stanley Simpson who is a prominent Fijian journalist, Director of MaiTV and the long-standing General Secretary of the Fijian Media Association (FMA), re-elected to the position in March 2026.

He is a vocal advocate for press freedom, editorial independence, and media ethics in the Pacific region.

Our club was grateful to hear firsthand about the circumstances associated with media freedom and challenges faced by various media outlets we have in Fiji due to change in times, increase in technology and use of social media, just like this.

What a pleasure for our club to host guest speaker, Sheraj Obeyesekere who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the South Pacific Stock Exchange.

He focuses on digital transformation, increasing investor education, improving listing rules, and aligning SPX standards with international best practices. Under his leadership, the SPX has focused on promoting women on company boards and encouraging dividend payments to investors.

He has highlighted record-breaking dividend payouts by SPX-listed companies in 2025 — our members were given first hand opportunities to ask away!

A friend of the Rotary Club of Suva, Governor of Reserve Bank of Fiji — Ariff Ali visited our club and gave incredible insight on the current global economic affairs to our members at our recent meeting from the standpoint of Fiji’s Central Bank.

The floor was buzzing with questions during this interactive luncheon on the local economy and all topics in between.

Here at Rotary, we believe in being updated and in touch with the world around us. We’re all about people and understanding what we can do to create a positive impact in our communities.

One step at a time.

We were delighted in hosting our guest speaker and we extend our sincerest gratitude and thanks to Mr. Ali in accepting our invitation.
