As we get closer to World Environment Day, we have another inspiring blog to share with you!

In this piece, Hamida Isaac, the Coordinator of the Kinango Human Rights Network (KIHURNET), sheds light on the risks Environmental Human Rights Defenders face when speaking out against environmental injustices.

Targeted harassment, surveillance, arbitrary arrests, and intimidation continue to threaten environmental defenders in Kinango and across the globe.

She says, "speaking out for environmental justice should never result in criminalisation. There is an urgent need to strengthen protection mechanisms and promote more inclusive environmental governance systems."

Through the Haki Ni Yetu Grant, KIHURNET is advancing environmental justice, climate action, and business and human rights accountability by empowering communities to raise concerns about pollution, land rights, environmental governance, and corporate responsibility. Haki Ni Yetu receives funding from the EU Delegation to Kenya.

Iloista Pride-kuukautta! Happy Pride Month! 🌈

Tämän vuoden Pride teema nostaa esillle vapauden kasvaa. Vapauden kasvaa ilon ja yhteisöllisyyden ympäröimänä juuri omana itsenään ilman syrjintää ja vihapuhetta. KIOS tukee ylpeästi sateenkaarioikeuksia puolustavia järjestöjä Itä-Afrikassa ja Etelä-Aasiassa, joiden työllä rakennetaan juuri tuota turvallista yhteisöllisyyttä ja tilaa olla oma itsensä.

Sateenkaarioikeudet ovat ihmisoikeuksia ja niiden puolustajia tarvitaan! Ollaan ylpeydellä ihmisoikeuksien puolella niin Pride -kuukautena kuin muinakin. KIOS juhlistaa Pride -kuukautta jakamalla tietoa KIOSin tukemien sateenkaarioikeuksia puolustavien järjestöjen työstä. Tulossa on esimerkiksi videotervehdyksiä sekä blogi, lisäksi KIOS osallistuu Pride- kulkueeseen sekä muutakin kivaa tulossa Pride- viikolla!

This year’s Pride theme highlights the freedom to grow. Freedom to grow surrounded by joy and sense of belonging without hate speech and discrimination. KIOS proudly support organisations defending LGBTIQA+ rights in East African and South Asia, this work is important in building the spaces for community and to be your own true self.

LGBTIQA+ rights are human rights and they need defenders! Let’s stand with pride on the side of human rights during this Pride Month and every other month. KIOS celebrates Pride Month byh sharing knowledge of the work KIOS grantees defending LGBTIQA+ rights are doing. Coming up is for example video greetings from human rights defenders and a blog. In addition KIOS joins the Pride March and other exciting stuff during the Pride week end of this month!

As we approach World Environment Day, we are reminded that the fight for our planet is also a fight for people. In this blog, Haki Ni Yetu grantee Environmental Rights Organizations Network EROG’s Network Coordinator Fardosa Mustafa highlights that protecting environmental defenders is essential for human rights, accountability, and meaningful climate action.

Across East Africa, environmental defenders are standing on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Because of this, they face intimidation, harassment, and even physical harm for protecting land, water, and communities.

“Communities cannot effectively participate in environmental governance or climate action when defenders are silenced, criminalised, or left without protection.”

Protecting environmental defenders is not just about human rights — it is central to climate justice.

Through the Haki Ni Yetu project, support to EROG has helped build regional solidarity, strengthen rapid response systems, and empower defenders to safely advance environmental justice. Haki Ni Yetu receives funding from the EU Delegation to Kenya.

Open call for Expressions of Interest to support human rights work in Sri Lanka carried out by local civil society organisations! 🇱🇰 📣

KIOS is excited to launch an open call to support human rights work in Sri Lanka. This call is open only for Sri Lankan, Sri Lanka-based organisations.

A separate info session on the call will be held on June 10 at 13:30 Sri Lankan time via Zoom (details in the link).

Help us spread the word! Share this call with relevant organisations and networks across Sri Lanka. 📣

This is a thematically limited call. The primary focus of the proposed action must fall under at least one of the following strategic thematic areas of KIOS. The strategic thematic areas of KIOS are following:
1. Non-Discrimination and Gender Equality
2. Democratic Rights and the Rule of Law
3. Responsible Business, Environment, and Human Rights

Smaller organisations with limited funding opportunities as well as organisations led by women, youth and marginalised groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applications to this call must be submitted by 23 June 2026 via the KIOS online portal.
