Brasilian presidentinvaalit ovat huipentumassa. Lähteekö Amazonian alueen metsäkato taas nousuun vai löytyykö tahtoa ja kansanvälistä yhteistyötä suojelulle?
University of Helsinki professori ja Amazonia-asiantuntija Markus Kröger on ollut kirjoittamassa artikkelia "Global responsibility for Amazon conservation: why soy, beef imports and agrochemical overuse demand urgent international action", jossa peräänkuulutetaan kansainvälisiä toimia metsäkadon vähentämiseksi.
"Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon is tightly linked to global supply chains of soy and beef, and to the intensifying use of hazardous agrochemicals whose impacts now reach deep into Indigenous and other local populations’ forest territories, cities and river systems. As international commitments to halt forest loss advance, we argue that global actors, including the European Union, G7, and the BRICS + group, and their member states, must adopt stronger, coordinated measures to curb deforestation-linked commodities and to end the export of toxic pesticides banned in their own countries. The preservation of the Amazon forest cannot withstand another decade of diffuse responsibility, fragmented policies, and unchecked demand. Deforestation-linked import restrictions on soy and meat originated from recently deforested areas can contribute to protecting Indigenous peoples, biodiversity, and climate only when adopted in a coordinated manner by major importing blocs."
