(In English below) Humanistisen nationalismitutkimuksen huippuyksikön NARSin avajaistilaisuus SKS:n juhlasalissa 29.5.2026 toi yhteen NARSin kansainvälisiä ja kotimaisia verkostoja. Ajankohtainen teema herätti runsaasti keskustelua ja uusia ideoita.
”Näemme jatkuvasti, kuinka nationalismi luo, rakentaa, purkaa ja hajottaa yhteisöjä. Nationalismi on ratkaisevassa roolissa määriteltäessä, miten aikamme keskeiset globaalit kriisit voidaan ratkaista – tai miten uusia ongelmia syntyy. Tämän monimutkaisen ilmiön ymmärtäminen sen eri ajallisissa ulottuvuuksissa on tutkimuskohteemme,” huippuyksikön johtaja Ville Kivimäki painotti puheessaan.
”Voi olla, että kun huippuyksikön kausi päättyy kahdeksan vuoden kuluttua, emme enää ajattele tutkivamme nationalismia aivan samassa mielessä kuin tänään. Jos niin tapahtuu, olemme onnistuneet.”

The launch event of NARS, the Center of Excellence in Nationalism Research in the Humanities at SKS on 29.5.2026, brought together the CoE’s international and domestic networks.
“The time for nationalism research is now. Around us, we see nationalism creating, building, deconstructing, and fracturing human communities. There are strong grounds for arguing that nationalism, as a political force and as a way through which people experience and attach themselves to nations, plays a crucial role in determining how the central global crises of our time may be solved – or how further problems are created. Understanding this complex phenomenon in its temporal dimensions is our object of research”, Ville Kivimäki, director of the center of excellence, emphasized in his speech.
“It may be that, when the Centre of Excellence concludes eight years from now, we will no longer think of ourselves as studying nationalism in quite the same sense or definition as we do today. If that happens, we will have succeeded in something important.”
