Celebrate craftsmanship from South Sudan 📿

This long single-strand Lariat Necklace is hand-beaded by internally displaced South Sudanese women, and Sudanese and Ethiopian refugee women living in South Sudan.

Finished with an oval beaded centrepiece and beaded tassels, its generous length allows it to be draped around the neck, wrapped as a bracelet or styled as a waist belt.

Created in partnership with Roots and featured in the Nest Refugee Artisan Accelerator collection, in partnership with Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and .

This year marks 75 years of the 1951 Refugee Convention - the landmark agreement that protects the right of people forced to flee their homes to seek safety and rebuild their lives.

The Convention specifically states the importance of self-employment for refugees, including handicrafts and commerce.

MADE51 is the 1951 Refugee Convention in action, in both name and practice.

Through market access, design and empowerment, refugee artisans transform traditional handicraft skills into income, dignity and opportunity.

Swipe through to see the exhibition panels that will be displayed at the Palais des Nations in Geneva as part of the 75th Anniversary Commemoration, demonstrating how MADE51 brings the Refugee Convention to life.

We will also have a pop-up stand selling refugee-made products, the Peace Tree installation will return to collect handwritten messages of peace from attendees, and each guest will receive a special commemorative gift handcrafted by Afghan refugee artisans. A small Summer accessory. A much bigger story.

The Syrian refugee artisans behind this piece are facing an uncertain future in Lebanon, the country that has hosted them for years.

The Peace Pencil Case carries a message of peace, stitched by hand.

Crafted by Sudanese refugee artisans in Egypt through MADE51 social enterprise partner Threads of Hope, each pencil case is embroidered with the words:

“I hope that we can return to our beautiful farms and green gardens.”

Written by artisan Mashaer, the quote reflects a hope shared by so many people forced to flee — not only for safety, but for home.

Through every stitch, the Peace Pencil Case becomes more than an everyday object. It is a story of memory, craftsmanship and hope for peace.

Meet Lucia, one of the designers behind the MADE51 Stackable Bracelet from South Sudan.

Lucia was displaced by the conflict that broke out in South Sudan in 2013. She first sought safety at a UN protection site - established to provide refuge for civilians displaced by the violence. She later relocated to Juba, where she learned beadwork with MADE51 social enterprise partner, Roots, and began her journey as an artisan.

Lucia shares how she began working with beads, what inspired her Stackable Bracelet design, and what it means to see people around the world wearing something she helped create.

Today, on World Refugee Day, we mark the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention — the landmark agreement that defines who a refugee is and the rights and protections available to all of us if we are ever forced to flee.

In many ways, MADE51 is the Refugee Convention in action. The "51" in our name references the Convention itself, while our work helps create opportunities for refugee artisans to access dignified work, preserve cultural heritage, and share their stories with the world.

By buying refugee-made items, people everywhere can stand in solidarity with refugees.

"I created something from my imagination, and I never thought it would turn out this well." — Jacky

Jacky's story reflects one of the core principles of MADE51: the power of bringing refugee and host communities together through meaningful work.

A university student, mother of two, and artisan from South Sudan, Jacky designed one of the new MADE51 Stackable Bracelets while working alongside displaced women through MADE51 social enterprise partner Roots.

Today, her design is being worn by people around the world, while helping create income opportunities for a community of 400 women artisans in South Sudan.

Together, these women show how shared opportunities can strengthen both refugee and host communities.
