Reflections on Visiting Buchenwald Memorial

Visiting the Buchenwald Memorial was one of the most powerful and emotional experiences of our excursion. Walking through the grounds of the former concentration camp made history feel real in a way that books and documentaries never can.

Standing in a place where thousands of people suffered, were persecuted, and lost their lives was deeply moving. The stories of the victims, the preserved remains of the camp, and the personal testimonies presented in the exhibition reminded us that behind every historical fact was a human being with hopes, dreams, and loved ones.

What struck many of us most was the contrast between the peaceful landscape surrounding the memorial and the unimaginable cruelty that once took place there. It was difficult to comprehend how such suffering could have happened, yet it reinforced the importance of remembering and learning from the past.

The visit encouraged us to reflect not only on the crimes of the N**i regime, but also on our responsibility today. It highlighted the importance of standing against antisemitism, racism, discrimination, and all forms of hatred. Remembering the victims is not only about looking back at history—it is also about protecting human dignity and democratic values in the present and future.

Buchenwald was not an easy place to visit, but it was an essential one. The experience left a lasting impression on all of us and reminded us why remembrance and historical education remain so important.

📍 Weimar 2026

Over four days, participants explored the intersections of democracy, colonialism, and remembrance culture. Through guided tours, museum visits, and discussions, we examined Germany’s colonial past, the history of the Weimar Republic, and the political use of cultural heritage.

A highlight of the excursion was the visit to the Buchenwald Memorial Site, which provided important insights into the crimes of National Socialism and the importance of preserving historical memory.

The program concluded with a visit to the Museum Forced Labour under National Socialism, encouraging reflection on human rights, discrimination, and democratic responsibility.
