About the Production

Based in Berlin and New York, the initiative With Wings and Roots is a team of independent media makers, educators and scholars working for immigrant rights and racial justice. We produce films, educational curricula, and online-platforms to challenge rigid and exclusionary debates around the topics of integration, migration, and identity. Centering the stories and perspectives of young people with the motto “reimagine belonging,” we foreground participation and dismantling racism to foster more inclusive societies. With Wings and Roots began in 2005, growing out of a documentary film project initiated by director Christina Antonakos-Wallace. Over the past decade it has grown to an multi-racial and multi-lingual team of filmmakers, educators, designers, academics and programmers, as well as partners and advisers living in the U.S. About the interactive website withwingsandroots.org:

What does it mean “to be American” or „to be German“ today and how is it different from 100 years ago? The website reimaginebelonging.org and reimaginebelonging.de feature historical timelines which explore how political, social and cultural events have shaped our understandings of citizenship, belonging and migration over time. In the page's online story collection, users can watch videos of young people who share their personal struggles, successes, experiences, and new visions of belonging and bring these conversations to their community. About the educational work:

We are an international team of educators and media-makers working for immigrant rights and racial justice. We produce media products, workshops, educational curricula, installations, and live events, and professional trainings specifically for educational settings. Participants have the space to explore their experiences, migration histories, and questions of belonging and citizenship with an antiracist lens. With Wings and Roots equips young people with critical media and production skills, empowering them to tell their own stories. Adults working in school and out-of-school contexts reflect on how to infuse their work with a critical lens, in order to create learning environments that honor the experiences of the young people they work with. www.withwingandroots.org
