The first part of the Train-the-Trainer (TTT) course Traditional Ropes Courses concluded on 01.10.2026 in Penrith, UK. Three motivated young people took part and learned a great deal from one another alongside Master Trainer Stu Wilkes. Excellent sessions were presented, and various topics were explored and discussed collaboratively. There was plenty of fun, too. Everyone is already looking forward to Part 2 in January.

In this practical presentation, Bas Cnossen, ERCA Sector Representative for Inspections and owner of Outdoor Sport Safety, will take a closer look at the essential role of inspections in ropes course safety.

We will focus on operational inspections and periodical inspections, exploring what to look for, how to identify potential risks, and how to ensure inspections are carried out consistently and effectively.

His work takes him from commercial adventure parks and recreational facilities to courses operated by police, military, and other professional organisations.

At the moment ERCA members are actively involved at the international REHACARE trade fair, offering visitors a chance to experience high-ropes activities firsthand.
For over 15 years, the group has been adapting and developing operational concepts for ropes courses to make them accessible to everyone. Dedicated individuals and staff from our member organisations collaborate on a voluntary basis to achieve this, having launched six ropes course projects from the ground up so far.
As a trade fair aimed at end consumers, REHACARE is the ideal venue to raise awareness among interested parties and key stakeholders showing that universally accessible ropes course experiences are indeed possible.

Linda Green brings over 25 years’ experience in health, safety and wellbeing, in the leisure industry, including 15 years in local authority enforcement as an Environmental Health Officer, specialising in regulatory compliance and intervention.

James Redfearn from Learn the Ropes Training will guide you through the interactive workshop. It will challenge participants to explore where their staff-training gaps lie, what happens when things go wrong, and what evidence they could produce to demonstrate that the right people have received the right training. Through realistic scenarios and practical discussion, we'll explore how accredited eLearning, assessment and certification can support a wider approach to staff competence, compliance and training records.

For our industry we keep a log of notifications which relate to safety of ropes course operations.
Whether it is a manufacturer product recall, a request for inspection or something we can learn from a near miss, all such notifications are accessible to you at the ERCA website.
As an additional service, ERCA members will be notified via email if a new notification has been added.

Insurance Matters: Getting it right .
- What cover do you need & why;
- How to prevent incidents and defend claims;
- Why documentation is important.

This session is delivered by Sophia Dunnett, who has been the Mutual Manager of the Activities Industry Mutual - AIM since January 2018. AIM provides liability cover to those working in the adventure activity industry covering both indoor and outdoor sectors. Responsible for the day to day running of the Mutual, she oversees the new business and the renewal process; regularly visits Members to discuss their requirements and issues affecting the various sectors of the Industry; and speaks at Sector and Industry events. A defendant insurance lawyer for 24 years prior to joining AIM, she brings a wealth of experience in terms of risk assessment and claims defensibility to the role and regularly meets with members to advise on claims defensibility and risk management.
