From One Health to One Welfare

How we treat animals and how we care for the environment have a profound impact on our own health and well-being.

✅ The health of humans, animals, and the environment is interconnected.

✅ Their well-being is equally interdependent and mutually influenced.

✅ Health is a significant component of good welfare, and good health includes well-being as a shared goal.

The One Welfare approach builds on One Health by recognising that sustainable solutions require attention not only to health, but also to welfare, ethics, and the relationships that connect animals, humans, and the environment.

𝗩𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗘𝗗𝗖𝗶𝗯𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗭𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗼𝘇𝗮

Last week, VETS UNITED representative Maria Victoria Larrateguy participated from the VI Jornadas Red Científica en Bienestar Animal (Scientific Animal Welfare Network) conference, which took place 24 and 25 of September in Zaragoza City, in Spain.

We had the honour of presenting an original research from 2024 funded by WTS Foundation to evaluate the situation of animal welfare teaching in Latin American Universities with animal health related study programmes. The aim of this study was meant to elucidate the obstacles and facilitators to improving animal welfare education for animal health professionals and consequently tailor the VETS UNITED resources and initiatives to the local context.

Since then, we have translated the Animal Welfare Teaching Modules and the Step-by-Step Guide to Spanish, supported four seed projects with Latin-American universities, and founded a scientific academic network to facilitate capacity building and collaboration within colleagues.

We are proud of our work and appreciate greatly the opportunity of sharing with other animal welfare researchers, lecturers and experts of the world in such a supporting environment.

Thanks to the organisation committee of the Conference, Miranda de la Lama and all the Red Científica en Bienestar Animal Members for the warm welcome and environment.

What is the connection between animal welfare and antimicrobial resistance?

When we talk about antimicrobial resistance (AMR), we often focus on antimicrobial use. However, animal welfare deserves much more attention in this discussion.

Poor welfare can increase the risk of infection because:

🔹 Stress can affect the immune system, making animals more vulnerable to disease.

🔹 Poor housing, hygiene, nutrition, or management can create conditions that allow pathogens to survive and spread more easily.

As infection risk increases, the need for antimicrobial treatment may also increase.

AMR is therefore not only a medical or pharmacological problem. It is also an animal welfare issue.

Preventing disease through good welfare, appropriate management, biosecurity, nutrition, hygiene, and responsible veterinary care can reduce the need for antimicrobials in the first place. By improving animal welfare, we can help break the cycle that contributes to the development and spread of antimicrobial resistance.

VETS UNITED Colombia UNIAGRARIA project

Over the past year (2025-2026), the VETS UNITED Colombia UNIAGRARIA Project, coordinated by Jhon Jairo Buenhombre Vasquez and Maria Nelly Cajiao Pachon, targeted improving the welfare of the animals at UNIAGRARIA's Research and Technological Development Centre (CIDT), integrating animal welfare into the school curriculum and building the capacity of students and academic staff.

We are happy to announce that the project was successful, and here are the achievements:

1. Establishment of four outdoor pasture-access pens to accommodate 500 laying hens.

2. Planting fifty trees to provide natural shelter areas and increase shade for the animals.

3. Fifteen environmental enrichment devices were designed, constructed, and installed in animal production units for laying hens, rabbits, cattle, and sheep.

4. More than 1,500 participants received hands-on training in animal welfare (AW). A total of 3,100 undergraduate students (Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine) and postgraduate students (Animal Welfare and Ethology) participated in 2025, and 1,750 participated in 2026.

5. Four hands-on animal welfare training courses were delivered, and 30 undergraduate and postgraduate courses were reviewed to incorporate animal welfare content.

6. Project results were disseminated through training activities, technical reports, and research outputs, including the International Delfín Programme, the 5th National and International Conference, "One Welfare, One Health, One Education: Educational and Research Experiences," the Latin America Academic Network for Animal Welfare webinar, and the faculty journal.
