𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐰𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫?

Effective animal welfare legislation should provide clear and specific regulations for all major areas where animals interact with humans. A comprehensive legal framework helps ensure that animals are protected, cared for, and treated humanely across different settings.

Key areas that animal welfare laws should address include:

🔹 Companion animals including traditional pets, exotic pets, and stray animals.

🔹Animals kept for farming purposes: promoting humane handling, housing, transport, and sustainable production systems.

🔹 Animals used for experimentation including research, testing, and educational purposes, with strong ethical and welfare considerations.

🔹 Wildlife and animals in zoos and aquaria: ensuring conservation, appropriate care, and welfare standards.

🔹 Animals used for work in areas of transport, security, and other labour-related activities.

🔹Animals used for sports, leisure, and entertainment: ensuring activities do not compromise animal wellbeing.

As human interactions with animals continue to evolve, animal welfare laws must also adapt to reflect scientific knowledge, ethical responsibility, and societal expectations.

𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮-𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗩𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 (𝗨𝗥-𝗖𝗩𝗔𝗦)

Assoc. Prof. Martin Nwawubizi, Principal of the University of Rwanda – College of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences (UR-CVAS), successfully conducted a three-day hybrid orientation workshop for the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
The newly established committee comprises 9 members from diverse disciplines, including Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science, Food Science, and Medicine. The committee is now fully operational, with the first set of applications already received for ethical review.
This initiative marks an important milestone in strengthening animal welfare ethics and research governance through multidisciplinary collaboration at UR-CVAS.
In addition, Dr. Jean Claude Manirambona has been appointed as the Animal Welfare Focal Person at UR-CVAS.

Building capacity, promoting humane practices, and advancing sustainable aquaculture.

We are pleased to share a successful update from the Fish Welfare Project under the leadership of Prof. Chinedu Athanasius Eze at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

The first hands-on training session focused on “Fish Welfare Production and Handling” and provided participants with practical knowledge and skills in:

• Fish production

• Fish welfare assessment

• Humane handling practices

• Water quality management

• Biosecurity measures for sustainable aquaculture practices

Dr. Oluwaseun Ojelade from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria, was the resource person for this impactful training.

This training marks an important step toward promoting sustainable aquaculture and advancing fish welfare awareness and practices in Nigeria and beyond.

𝐀𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

Legislation plays a critical role in shaping how societies protect and promote animal welfare

Animal welfare concerns often emerge when human interests are placed above the needs and wellbeing of animals. Effective legislation therefore becomes a powerful tool for safeguarding animal interests and ensuring accountability.

The development of animal welfare laws is influenced by three major factors:

🔹 Political & Economic Interests: Including political agendas, trade priorities, and international agreements.

🔹 Ethics: Recognition of animal sentience and intrinsic value, growing public concern, and sustained advocacy efforts.

🔹 Science & Knowledge: Research evidence on sentience, behaviour, nutrition, genetics, and the interconnected principles of One Health and One Welfare.

Strengthening animal welfare legislation requires collaboration between policymakers, scientists, educators, advocates, and the wider public to create systems that are both humane and sustainable.

𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗼́𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼 𝗩𝗘𝗧𝗦 𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗘𝗗 𝗱𝗲 𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗔𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗥𝗜𝗔 𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗮 𝗥𝗘𝗗 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲́𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗱𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗼𝗮𝗺𝗲́𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮

El martes 26 de mayo vivimos un encuentro verdaderamente enriquecedor: el Dr John Buenhombre y la Dra. María Nelly Cajiao compartieron su experiencia liderando uno de los primeros proyectos VETS UNITED en la región latinoamericana.

Esta iniciativa se enfoca en transformar las instalaciones ganaderas del Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo Tecnológico de UNIAGRARIA, con el objetivo de convertirlas en una granja modelo con altos estándares de bienestar animal.

El proyecto pone especial énfasis en promover el bienestar positivo, incluyendo el acceso al pastoreo, el enriquecimiento ambiental y sistemas de alojamiento libres de jaulas. Además, destaca la importancia de brindar a los animales la posibilidad de agencia, pudiendo elegir dónde y cómo interactuar dentro de su entorno.

Este modelo ya está generando impacto en la formación académica, tanto en grado como en posgrado. Tal como expresó el coordinador del proyecto, lograr coherencia entre la teoría y la práctica representa un gran avance pedagógico, además de constituir un ejemplo inspirador para profesionales y productores de la región. Sobre todo, porque la productividad también se vio favorecida.

Un paso más hacia sistemas productivos más éticos, sostenibles e innovadores a través de la educación.

🔹 Proper journey planning
🔹 Reducing stress during and after transport
🔹 Having effective contingency plans in place before transport begins

The Universities Networks for Animal Welfare in Africa and Latin America

Since launching in 2024, the Africa and Latin America Universities Network have grown into a vibrant community of 250+ animal health professionals (in Universities and Colleges) across 145 institutions in 32 countries.

The network was created to strengthen:
🔹 Knowledge exchange
🔹 Collaboration and networking
🔹 Problem-solving and capacity development

In our first network survey (November 2025), 81–85% of the members identified learning as a key priority, highlighting the importance of cross-border collaboration in strengthening animal welfare education and professional capacity.

Successful transport starts long before the journey begins.

Careful preparation is essential to ensure safe, efficient, and welfare-focused transport operations. Before transport, it’s important to:

✅ Plan the journey carefully
✅ Keep journey duration to a minimum by choosing the closest possible destination
✅ Identify suitable stops with safe loading ramps, enclosures, and access to food and water
✅ Prepare and check all required documents
✅ Ensure animals are fit and properly prepared for transport
✅ Have contingency plans in place for unforeseen events

Good planning helps reduce stress, improve safety, support compliance, and promote better animal welfare throughout the entire journey.

Nos enorgullece compartir la participación del Programa VETS UNITED en el 5° Encuentro Nacional e Internacional “Un Bienestar, Una Salud, Una Educación”, organizado por UNIAGRARIA realizarse el día 19 de Mayo de 2026.

Se tratará de un espacio académico y profesional en formato de galería virtual, donde podrán encontrar diferentes ponencias y presentaciones de especialistas y organizaciones comprometidas con el enfoque Unas Salud y Un Bienestar y la educación, promoviendo la integración entre la salud animal, humana y ambiental, junto con el rol clave de la educación en este ecosistema.

En esta plataforma, la representante del programa VETS UNITED en Latinoamérica, Med.Vet. Dipl. Maria Victoria Larrateguy, estará compartiendo datos sobre el estado la situación actual de la enseñanza del bienestar animal en profesiones de salud animal y sobre los recursos e iniciativas del programa en la región, reafirmando nuestro compromiso con:

✅ La promoción del bienestar animal a través de la educación
✅ La formación continua de profesionales de la salud animal
✅ El trabajo interdisciplinario como pilar para una salud integral

When animals are being transported, how we move them matters. Too often, animals are beaten, dragged, or forced into vehicles, which causes unnecessary stress, fear, and injury for both the animals and the handlers.

There’s a welfare-friendly way to move animals safely and efficiently which is based on simply understanding the concepts of flight zone and point of balance

Here’s how it works:

👉To move a single animal forward: position yourself in the flight zone behind the point of balance

👉To move a single animal forward: stand in the flight zone in front of the point of balance

👉To stop a single animal, step out of the flight zone

👉To move a group of animals forward: walk within the flight zone while moving in the opposite direction of the group
