Resonance residency underway

A warm welcome to Monika Emmanuelle Kazi, now artist-in-residence at CERN.

As part of Resonance, Kazi will develop her project Crystalline Memories, exploring perceptions of the future by connecting research conducted on CERN’s CLOUD experiment and the former CAST experiment with reflections on diasporic memory.

Time is relative. Your impact is absolute.

🎓 Last week, teachers from across Germany came to CERN for an inspiring week of training, learning and discovery as part of the CERN National Teacher Programmes.

Their programme included a special Q&A session with former CERN Director-General Professor Rolf-Dieter Heuer, offering a unique insight into the relationship between science, education and international collaboration.

🌙 A night of science and discovery

Visitors of all ages had the chance to experience CERN in a whole new light this past weekend as Nuit des Musées came to the Science Gateway. Guests explored interactive exhibits, hands-on workshops, encounters with CERN scientists and more.

Missed out but still curious to explore CERN? CineGlobe Film Festival kicks off today! Check it out: https://cineglobe.ch/

🏆 Results are in: Beamline for Schools competition 2026

The winners of the 13th edition of the CERN Beamline for Schools competition are Team POLARIS (Bangladesh), Team attoPION (India), Team PionIST 3 (Türkiye), Team Mobile MIPs (United Kingdom) and Team Centauri Stars (United States of America).

The teams will travel to CERN, DESY and ELSA, respectively, to perform the experiments they have designed on the real beamline of a particle accelerator.

We would like to extend our congratulations to the winners, and all the students who put together proposals for this year’s competition – judging by the quality of the entries, the future of particle physics is accelerating at impressive speed!

The Beamline for Schools (BL4S) competition is made possible through supporters of the CERN & Society Foundation. These include individual donors, foundations and companies. The 13th edition of the competition is supported notably by ROLEX through its Perpetual Planet Initiative and by the Wilhelm und Else Heraeus-Stiftung in Germany.

“Human curiosity doesn’t need to have a motivation behind it. Human curiosity is something we have been pursuing it since the dawn of man. A lot of the time, there wasn’t motivation behind it, it was just sparked naturally. It is important to bring this spirit everywhere. It is what makes us human.”

We recently caught up with Sergio, students currently completing doctoral research at CERN with through the non-Member State PhD Studentship.

We asked him about his PhD experience, as well as the all important question: how would you explain your PhD to a five-year old?
