Awesome scenes from Smukfest!

The CERN Festival Programme made the latest stop on its travels different around Member States last week in Denmark, welcoming at least 10,000 visitors to its Science Pavilion for hands-on activities and even a talk from Commander of the International Space Station, Andreas Mogensen.

Next stop: Shambala Festival in the UK!

Beamline for Schools 2026: winners in action

Over the past two weeks, the winning Beamline for Schools (BL4S) teams have been at CERN, Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY and ELSA (The University of Bonn) turning their ideas into reality by putting their proposals to the test.

Most importantly, they have been working alongside physicists, engineers and technicians to solve challenges exactly as researchers do. Beyond the beamline, they've experienced first-hand what it's like to be part of an international scientific collaboration.

It's amazing to watch these young scientists transform ambitious proposals into real discoveries.

Check out some snapshots of the two teams based at CERN!

Beamline begins

The winning teams of Beamline for Schools (BL4S) have arrived at their host laboratories and are taking their first steps toward bringing their experiments to life.

Pictured here are team attoPION (India) and PionIST 3 (Türkiye) at CERN; POLARIS (Bangladesh) at ELSA at The University of Bonn; and Mobile MIPs (UK) together with Centauri Stars (USA) at Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY.

After months of preparation, the teams are now ready to put their ideas to the test, collect data and gain hands-on experience in particle physics at some of the world's leading research centres.

Congratulations to all the teams on reaching this remarkable milestone. We look forward to following their experiments and discoveries in the weeks ahead!

We recently caught up with Mahmoud, from Egypt, who is carrying out doctoral research at CERN as part of the non-Member State PhD Studentship, supported through the CERN & Society Foundation.

The non-Member State PhD Studentship connects CERN with the world, fostering a new global research community of talented minds exploring their curiosity right at the forefront of cutting-edge fundamental research.

Read more about Mahmoud, and find information about how you can support a PhD student, on our website: https://cernandsocietyfoundation.cern/meet-mahmoud-from-egypt-completing-a-phd-at-cern-through-the-non-member-state-phd-studentship/

Earlier in the summer, curious minds came together at Future Explorers, CERN's summer science festival, for a day dedicated to discovery and adventure.

Visitors explored the frontiers of science through engaging talks, interactive activities and conversations with astronauts, scientists, sailors, artists and other pioneers who are redefining what's possible.

The event was a powerful reminder that exploration is not just about reaching new places. It's about asking questions, working together and imagining new futures.
