Artanim Artanim is a leading Swiss center for motion capture technologies based in Geneva.

Established in 2011 as a non‑profit foundation, we span three complementary domains: R&D, production, and education. Our research focuses on two pillars — medical applications (biomechanics, imaging, surgical planning, rehabilitation) and VR/AR applications emphasizing real‑time interaction. This summer, we are introducing the people behind Artanim’s projects 🔆

Today, meet 𝗬𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗺𝗶𝗱 𝗗𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗯𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗿, our 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗥&𝗗 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿.

At Artanim Yves works with 𝟯𝗗 and 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀, creating advanced virtual characters from facial expressions to sophisticated behavioral systems involving movement, animation, and interaction.

Right now, he is working on ‘𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗫𝗥’, a project exploring 𝗔𝗜-𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝟯𝗗 𝘃𝗶𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 that can communicate with users and respond to what is happening around them. The goal is for these guides to 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 and even help users with tasks through 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Making all of this happen smoothly comes with some fascinating technical challenges!

What Yves particularly enjoys at Artanim is the 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 and the opportunity to explore new and 𝗰𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴-𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀. Over the years, he has worked on a wide range of 3D and real-time applications, including a 𝗵𝗼𝘁-𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 and the historical VR experience ‘𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗮 𝟭𝟴𝟱𝟬’.

And something people may not know about Yves? He has also done quite a bit of 𝟯𝗗 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 and 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰, which means he 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀’ 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 very well… and knows exactly how much they hate the bugs he creates! 😄

Today, meet 𝐉𝐨𝐚𝐧 𝐋𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐚, 𝑺𝒆𝒏𝒊𝒐𝒓 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒓.

At Artanim, Joan explores how 𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 can 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 the way we pay 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭 with virtual characters.

One of his current research areas is character animation. He is exploring 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐬-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐬 trained with deep reinforcement learning, and whether they can produce natural enough movements for real-world VR productions.

He is also investigating 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, particularly how we direct our 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞. By analysing users’ responses and eye movements, he is exploring what happens when we learn and interact in virtual environments.

What Joan particularly appreciates about Artanim is the combination of a 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡-𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 with strong 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐞 in character animation and VR production, a combination that is not always easy to find in academic research labs.

And outside of research? Joan enjoys music and playing the piano 🎹

This summer, we are introducing the people behind Artanim’s projects 🔆

Today, meet 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐃𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐨, our 3𝑫 𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒔𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍-𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒑𝒉𝒊𝒄𝒔.

At Artanim, Michelle works on real-time graphics, with a particular focus on 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐫𝐭, 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, and 𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠, although she’ll gladly model cute robots too! 🤖

At the moment, she is bringing our 𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐕𝐑 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐮𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 with 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬, so they can run seamlessly on our markerless VR platform. This means adapting them to newer versions of Unity and updating their underlying rendering systems. The goal is to make experiences such as 𝑮𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒂 1850 and 𝑳𝒂 𝑵𝒖𝒊𝒕 𝒅𝒆 𝒍’𝑬𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒅𝒆 available again to Geneva audiences as soon as we have a venue where they can be presented.

For example, the 𝐺𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑣𝑎 1850 experience, first released in 2018 — eight years is a long time in game-engine time! — features many fun rendering tricks, including portals and changing day-night cycles, which no longer work properly with modern software. As the underlying rendering architecture is being updated, Michelle’s current challenge is to port these effects to the new system.

What Michelle particularly loves about working at Artanim is the variety of her tasks. One week she might be simulating whale echolocation through 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 and 𝐕𝐅𝐗, and the next she might be looking at pavement 𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 for the streets of Geneva.

One thing people may not always see is 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐠𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐩𝐢𝐱𝐞𝐥𝐬! 🎨📐 Beyond formulas and textbooks, Michelle draws endless inspiration from the online technical-art community, whose culture of knowledge-sharing has been just as formative as art school.

This summer, we are introducing the people behind Artanim’s projects.

Today, we are pleased to introduce Marlène Arévalo, our Senior Project Manager.

At Artanim, Marlène combines 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. She helps ensure the smooth running of our research projects while also supporting the visibility of Artanim's scientific and technological achievements.

Besides overseeing day-to-day operations and our communication channels, one of her current key objectives is to create Artanim’s new showreel. The challenge is to capture years of research and innovation in 𝐕𝐑/𝐗𝐑 and 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 in a concise, engaging 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 that reflects the breadth of our expertise and technological evolution.

What motivates Marlène most is the 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 of her role. One moment she manages the financial aspects of EU and SNSF-funded research projects, the next she edits videos, updates the website, or prepares a social media post. Working every day alongside researchers and engineers developing the next generation of immersive technologies makes the role especially rewarding.

One thing people may not always see is that supporting an immersive technology lab means balancing rigorous project management with creative communication, ensuring that 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝-𝐭𝐡𝐞-𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬 operations seamlessly 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 we share. That's exactly what makes it so enjoyable.

Today, meet Matteo Mancuso, 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉 𝑬𝒏𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒓.

At Artanim Matteo 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 that combine biomechanics, motion capture, and virtual or augmented reality to help patients recover from shoulder injuries. Right now, he is preparing these systems for clinical trials after very encouraging results from the first hospital evaluations.

What makes this work especially exciting is the opportunity to improve rehabilitation by making it more engaging for patients through 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬, while providing clinicians with accurate real-time feedback.

One thing Matteo particularly enjoys at Artanim is working alongside engineers, artists, and game designers to 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 that are both 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐮𝐬𝐞.

A surprising aspect of Matteo is that besides his medical work, Matteo has a second identity as a body actor! He is the main teacher in a historical fencing association and is involved in the entertainment branch of Artanim, performing stunts for immersive experiences such as 𝐄𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭.

Today, meet 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐞́𝐫𝐢𝐞 𝐉𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐝, our 3𝑫 𝑨𝒏𝒊𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑴𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑪𝒂𝒑𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝑺𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒕.

Valérie works on the 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬, from recording human movement with our Vicon cameras to refining animations and integrating them into interactive experiences. She is currently 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐢𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 by testing new technologies and exploring ways to 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬, especially for fingers and character interactions.

What makes this work exciting is the 𝐰𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 offered by motion capture. The same technology can bring realistic characters to life in entertainment projects, create more stylized animations, or support research in areas such as medicine and biomechanics.

One thing Valérie particularly enjoys at Artanim is the 𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 and the opportunity to combine technical challenges with creativity. And something people may not always realize is that motion capture does not automatically create a finished animation. A lot of expertise, processing, and artistic work goes into turning movement data into a convincing final result. That’s what makes this profession both 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞!

Today, meet 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗞𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗵𝗮𝗺, our 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗥&𝗗 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿.

At Artanim Bart works on 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆. He is currently focusing on a gamified 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 app for shoulder rehabilitation, aimed at making physiotherapy fun and motivating for patients. Additionally, he is exploring how 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 and AR can make motion analysis more practical and easier to use for healthcare professionals.

One thing Bart particularly enjoys at Artanim is that no two days are the same! He loves tackling a wide variety of research and production projects that constantly touch on new domains. And something people may not always realize is how much teamwork goes into 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀 into tools that people can 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲.

𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥?

Back in 2024, we put this question to the test while working on 𝑅𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝐺𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑠, an experimental video project by Swiss visual artist Alan Bogana.

Wearing Xsens Entertainment inertial motion capture suits, two performers flew inside a vertical wind tunnel, a very different environment from a traditional mocap studio!

Capturing movement in free flight required us to adapt our workflow and ensure reliable tracking despite the strong airflow and continuous 3D motion.

It's always exciting to look back at projects that challenge our technology and push us to explore new capture environments.

Nous sommes fiers d’annoncer que notre directrice de recherche, la Dre Charbonnier, donnera sa leçon publique dans le cadre de sa nomination à la fonction de 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲 à l’ Université de Genève, au sein du Département de radiologie et informatique médicale de la Faculté de médecine.

Over the past three days, our colleague Matteo Mancuso attended the 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 2026 in Lyon. 🇫🇷

During the event, he presented recent results from the feasibility study of our 𝐌𝐨𝐑𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐛 𝐗𝐑 project, which focuses on shoulder rehabilitation using extended reality and motion tracking. 🦾

He also had the opportunity to attend many inspiring scientific sessions and exhibition demonstrations on motion analysis, surgical techniques, ergonomics sports, rehabilitation and muscle biomechanics, all closely connected to the shoulder.

It was a great opportunity to share our work, exchange with the international shoulder biomechanics community, and bring back new ideas for the future development of MoRehab XR. 🤝
