Artanim

Artanim Artanim is a leading Swiss center for motion capture technologies based in Geneva.

Established in 2011 as a non‑profit foundation, we span three complementary domains: R&D, production, and education. Our research focuses on two pillars — medical applications (biomechanics, imaging, surgical planning, rehabilitation) and VR/AR applications emphasizing real‑time interaction. On the production side, we deliver studio‑grade full‑performance capture, animation cleanup and retargeting

for film, games, and interactive installations for events and museums. Education is core to our mission: we build custom workshops and curricula with universities and professional schools. If you’re exploring what motion capture can do — from clinical insight to unforgettable immersive experiences — we’re here to help.

🚀 𝐌𝐚𝐣𝐨𝐫 𝐮𝐩𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐨!

Big news at Artanim: our studio now features 𝟐𝟒 Vicon 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐲𝐫𝐢𝐞 𝐕𝐊𝟐𝟔 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐬, replacing our faithful Vicon T40s after more than 15 years of loyal service.
Moving from 4MP to 𝟐𝟔.𝟐𝐌𝐏, this new system allows us to expand our capture volume while significantly improving the quality, precision and fidelity of the motion capture data we record.

And that’s not all.

We have also installed 𝟐𝟐 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐬, enabling real-time capture of several actors in the same 11m x 5.5m space, with virtually zero setup time.

𝐍𝐨 𝐕𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐫𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐬. 𝐍𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬. Just step into the volume and start moving.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝟑𝐃 𝐕𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝𝐬?

Attention and Curiosity play a significant role in how we behave and learn. It is however still very difficult to measure and evaluate these processes. Can Virtual Reality be of help here? And what even are the parameters for efficient learning?

These sorts of questions are what 𝐴𝐵𝐶-𝑆𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒 is all about. This SNSF-supported project, which runs from 2024 to 2028, combines the expertise of LABNIC, TECFA and Artanim to try and find answers by exploring these concepts in three building blocks:

• 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝟑𝐃 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 – what signals can we obtain to determine if we’re paying attention at all? And what are the mechanisms that drive attention?

• 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 – how do we measure the role our curiosity plays? And can we use that information to determine if it helps or hinders our memory in VR?

• 𝐕𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐬-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 – does it help to have physically interactive characters in educational VR? And do their social cues affect how we pay attention?

At Artanim, we focus on the development of the physics-based controllers that make the virtual characters work, and we contribute to the design of behavioral experiments to validate their impact on attention and learning. And together with our artists and developers we create the VR environments and the characters within them to make the various studies possible.

We are proud to announce that Artanim has been selected by Cinzia Fossati (writer-director) and Laurence Moletta (writer-composer) to lead the Phase 1 R&D of
𝑺𝒚𝒎𝒑𝒉𝒐𝒏𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒆𝒑. 🌊

This new multi-user XR experience invites participants to step into the world of s***m whales through sound, movement, and collective immersion. 🫧

Today, we also held our first review session with Cinzia — a important milestone for the project, and one we are happy to share through these first test pictures.

At the heart of 𝑆𝑦𝑚𝑝ℎ𝑜𝑛𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐷𝑒𝑒𝑝 is a strong environmental intention: 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐧𝐨𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 by letting audiences experience the ocean through the sensory world of s***m whales. 🐋

For this first R&D phase, Artanim is developing a multi-user VR prototype exploring 𝐬𝐰𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐕𝐑 and 𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 as shared modes of perception and interaction.

This project is support by CNC - Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée, Migros Storylab, Cinéforom, Ville de Genève, and Etat de Genève, and is accompanied by Laetitia Bochud and Virtual Switzerland.

A great milestone for 𝐌𝐨𝐑𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐛 𝐗𝐑!

We’ve just completed our 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝟏𝟓 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 to explore how 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 (VR) can make shoulder rehabilitation more engaging and motivating.

MoRehab XR, developed by Artanim together with Hôpital de La Tour, turns rehabilitation exercises into interactive VR challenges designed to keep patients involved while also helping track their progress over time.

The first results are very promising: participants were able to complete the sessions successfully, with very 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭, 𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤, and 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭.

This is an exciting step forward, and we’re looking forward to the next phase of the project.

A big thank you to everyone involved in this project — the clinical team (Alexandre Lädermann, Antoine Seurot, Hugo Bothorel), researchers, developers, artists, and of course the patients who took part in the study.

𝐓𝐰𝐨 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐥𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠!

Permanently installed at 𝐄𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐧 in Château-d’Œx since January 2024, our 𝐔𝐥𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐜 hot air balloon flight simulator continues to welcome visitors in 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞, without constant supervision.

This is something we are especially proud of: beyond the immersive experience itself, this project shows that a VR installation can be designed 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭, 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞.

The experience allows up to 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 to step into a virtual hot air balloon and 𝐟𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 over the beautiful 𝐏𝐚𝐲𝐬-𝐝’𝐄𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐮𝐭, in a realistic simulation based on a detailed 3D scan of the region.

To share this milestone, we’ve created a trailer of the installation.

Take a look — and if you’re passing through Château-d’Œx, come and try it for yourself!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐟 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧’𝐭 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞?

With 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄, a European research project running from 2024 to 2027, researchers and innovators from 17 organisations across Europe are working together to rethink how people connect in extended reality (XR).

The goal: make remote interactions feel far more real and natural.

The project explores several breakthrough technologies:
• 𝐔𝐥𝐭𝐫𝐚-𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 to bring people into shared virtual spaces as realistic 3D representations
• 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 so users can feel touch and object interactions
• 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐬 able to react naturally and collaborate with users

At Artanim, we focus on developing physics-based control for 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐬, allowing them to react to body movements and interact with their environment.

PRESENCE aims to redefine what it means to “𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫” 𝐚𝐭 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, opening new possibilities for collaboration, training, culture, and social experiences in XR.
