Motorcycle and Scooter Riders on the Road:
Tuesday, June 9th
This year's 35th annual worldwide Ride to Work Day is expected to be one of the largest in the event's history, according to Ride to Work, the non-profit organization coordinating the annual campaign. On this day each year, more of America's 8 million-plus motorcycles and scooters are used for practical transportation such as commuting, errands, and everyday travel. Organizers estimate that more than one million additional riders worldwide will participate.
Motorcycles and scooters offer several transportation advantages, especially in congested urban areas. Riders often reach destinations more quickly than automobile commuters in heavy traffic, while using less fuel, requiring fewer raw materials to manufacture, and taking up significantly less roadway and parking space. Increased motorcycle use can also help reduce traffic congestion and infrastructure demand in densely populated areas.
“People do not usually think about or fully appreciate the comparative benefits of riding for useful everyday transportation, and also tend to minimize the range of negatives resulting from a near-universal dependence on autos. Cars are wonderful vehicles, but the reasons to ride instead of drive go well beyond carbon footprints” states Andy Goldfine, an event organizer.
Ride to Work Day is intended to increase awareness among the public, businesses, and government leaders about the role motorcycles can play in modern transportation systems. The event promotes broader understanding and recognition for riders who choose motorcycles and scooters for commuting, errands, and everyday transportation, while also celebrating the enjoyment and freedom that riding provides.
