June 1st is International Wild Salmon Day🎉

Today we celebrate wild salmon, our relationships with them, and the invaluable role they play in ecosystems across the globe🌎

This morning, the Yukon Salmon Sub-Committee observed International Wild Salmon Day alongside representatives of the Pacific Salmon Foundation, Rivers to Ridges, Kwanlin Dün First Nation, and participants in the Southern Lakes First Nations Fisheries Field Skills Training Camp. 🤝

We spent the morning discussing the importance of wild salmon, the threats that are facing them, and how they connect us: to the land, to the water, and to one another.

This , we encourage you to consider the ways in which you are personally connected to salmon. Whether you grew up alongside them, or are just starting your salmon journey, it will take all of us working together to ensure there are healthy and resilient salmon for future generations🐟

We often hear this question in Canada: Are Alaskans still fishing Yukon River Chinook?

It’s a fair question, and one many people are wondering about. Let’s take a closer look at what’s really happening on the river 🔍

✅ Alaska’s in-river Chinook fisheries are closed, including subsistence fishing. Alaskans are still allowed to fish for freshwater species with smaller nets, which do catch a few Chinook. However, this year, Alaskans pulled all nets for the bulk of the Chinook run (about 2-3 weeks), helping protect the run as it moved upriver toward the border.
✅ Cultural permits (potlatch/educational) allow some limited Chinook harvest under the 7-year agreement. However, how and when these cultural fisheries should happen remains undecided at an international level.
⚠️ Bycatch in ocean fisheries: The Bering Sea po***ck fishery does catch some Yukon River Chinook. This harvest is estimated at about 1–3% of the run. Area M fisheries rarely encounter them.

📊 Recent estimates (rounded):
• 1,100 Alaskan in-river harvest of Canadian-origin Chinook in 2024.
• 500 bycatch in BSAI po***ck fishery (from 2021, the most recent available data).
• ~25,000 total Canadian Chinook returned in 2024.

🔻 Bottom line: Alaska has drastically reduced its Chinook harvest — but it’s not zero. In total, about 6% of the run is still being removed in Alaskan fisheries.

The Yukon Salmon Sub-Committee continues to advocate for zero harvest of Yukon River Chinook salmon.
