The high cost of living in Canada has a significant impact on mental health and wellbeing.

Key facts:
41% of respondents feel financial pressures are affecting their mental health.

23% are concerned about their ability to make rent or mortgage payments, leading to higher levels of anxiety.

40% are struggling to adequately feed themselves or their families, which is impacting their mental health.

28% say the inability to pay is a reason for not accessing mental health care, despite needing it.

Studies have shown a harmful link between high rental costs and employee recruitment, productivity and retention, which hurts businesses and a community’s economy.

1. Labour shortage is directly tied to housing
As the cost of housing goes up in a community, people will move away and new workers will choose not to move there.

2. Employee retention is tied to available and affordable housing
A 2022 survey found that 1 in 3 workers consider moving employers due to the increase in cost of living. As an employer, you may spend time and money training employees only for them to leave as soon as a higher paying opportunity presents itself. This especially impacts entrepreneurs and small to medium businesses in the Yukon.

3. Housing affordability can undermine the Yukon’s future economic growth and prosperity
Spending more than 30% of income on housing means that community members and families have fewer funds to spend on food and other consumer goods.
When our community is housed in homes they can afford, they help local businesses because they can afford to eat in restaurants and shop in stores.
