Involvement in music and arts-related activities jumped from 18 to 30 per cent.

Volunteering
Children’s engagement with volunteering rose from 29 to 45 per cent.

Participating in extracurricular activities enables children to explore interests, build their teamwork and leadership skills, and get a leg-up when applying to post-secondary education.

What happens if things go sideways?
We have excellent relationships with land owners in Whitehorse, and many reach out to us directly for support when it is needed.

Here are some of the ways that we support land owners and tenants to ensure that your friends, neighbours, and family members have a safe and stable place to call home:
✅ For tenants who receive financial assistance – the cheque goes directly to the land owner.
✅ If a client often forgets to take out the garbage? We call and remind them.
✅ A recurring issue? We find them support.
✅ Support with move outs and clean ups.
✅ Damage clean up and repairs.

Access to safe and stable housing means better health for families.

Over 70 per cent of surveyed families* said they’ve experienced fewer colds, flus, allergies and asthma symptoms since moving into affordable homes.

With affordable housing costs, families can afford to feed their children healthier foods. Eating a balanced diet is greatly beneficial to an individual’s health, and families now have a greater ability to purchase fresh produce and nutrient-rich foods.

A step-by-step guide to the By-Name List

Being on the By-Name List (BNL) can help people connect with housing or supports, but it does not guarantee housing immediately.

Step 1
Do an intake at any one of our intake points to get added to the list.

Step 2
The Coordinated Housing Access Team (CHAT) meets on a regular basis to match people to available units based on priority.

Step 3
When a client comes up as a potential match for a unit, someone from CHAT will reach out to let them know about the housing opportunity.

Step 4
If the client is interested in the unit, we can support them with attending a viewing, facilitating the lease signing, helping them organize paying a damage deposit, and setting up ongoing rent payments.

Here are some examples of support we may be able to offer...

➡Help planning out next steps to find housing or deal with a housing crisis
➡Help navigating systems and finding the right person to talk to – whether it’s the Residential Tenancies Office, Yukon Housing, Social Assistance, or someone else
➡Support completing paperwork or getting other things in place that you need to get housing or stay housed (such as taxes & notices of assessment, housing or utilities applications, or IDs)
➡Support to try and prevent an eviction: filing an appeal, talking with your landlord, or finding support for whatever challenges you’re facing
➡Information about your rights and responsibilities as a tenant, and where to get support
➡Ongoing support with challenges that come up once you’re housed

What is the By-Name List?
The By-Name List is a single, shared list of people experiencing homelessness.

This By-Name List helps us
➡understand the scope of homelessness in Whitehorse so we can advocate for the resources needed in our community
➡prioritize resources based on need
➡make sure every housing referral is the best fit possible.

This is not a wait list but is rather about making a best possible match based on each person’s needs and the available housing units.

Being on the By-Name List can help people get matched with housing or supports such as rent subsidies, but it does not guarantee housing immediately.

How to get on the By-Name List?
