Some of us may be interested to learn that the YWB, in issuing a licence to a placer miner proposing to operate adjacent to the Dawson landfill, has imposed a security deposit of $47,000.
This is extraordinarily unusual. Although the legislation does allow for security, it is almost never imposed. To my knowledge this is only the second time in history.
YG EMR and YG ENV and TH all called for security, to the tune of just over $200,000.
TH also opposed issuing any water licence at all.
Security was needed because of the licensees long history of ignoring conditions of their licences, and disregarding orders given by inspectors.
Because the operation is immediately adjacent to the dump, there is a real risk of toxic leachate spreading underground in the Klondike valley.
Currently, the leachate is more or less contained by the impermeable nature of the underlying and surrounding permafrost.
The stripping involved in placer mining is likely to melt the permafrost.
Several conditions apply to the care of permafrost and the monitoring of groundwater movement.

Pursuant to s.23 of the Waters Act and s.13 of the Waters Act Regulation the Yukon Water Board is obliged to maintain a public register for each application received by the Board.

The consensus is that Pika are the most charismatic small mammal in Yukon. They are also remarkably hard to find.
But if you do meet one, please tell the Pika Patrol!

Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) are places identified as hosting rare and or imperilled species.
Some, but by all means not all KBAs have some form of protection.
This brand new interactive dashboard allows us to explore KBAs, and to learn which rare plants and animals depend upon them.

Notoriously, Yukon has joined Alberta in forbidding anyone new from connecting solar arrays to the grid.
However, millions of people in Germany, and now in multiple U.S. States, are connecting a couple panels to their residences and plugging them directly into a household outlet, regardless of what the utility says.
So many people did this in Germany that they had to make it legal, and now Germans can buy balcony solar kits in Ikea for about 36 cents a watt.
Perhaps if enough people did it in Yukon, something similar would happen

Better yet, they should not have been illegally harvested at all.

Illegally harvested thinhorn sheep were returned to the Yukon in May 2026 following a joint investigation between Yukon Conservation Officer Services, Alaska Wildlife Troopers and United States National Park Service, with support from Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The case resulted in significant fines and convictions, reinforcing strong cross-border wildlife protection efforts.

📣The 2026 Moosehide Gathering is almost here!
Mark your calendars for this important event taking place July 30 - August 2, 2026.

Moosehide Gathering is a biennial celebration of Indigenous culture at Moosehide Village on the Yukon River. Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in welcomes everyone to attend!

🪶This year, we have the particular honor of featuring original artwork by Graham Everitt on the Moosehide Gathering poster.

A little bit about Graham:
Graham Everitt, Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Artist
February 21, 1976 – September 2018

Graham was born with talent, an art talent that led him to create and inspire. Whether his art was painted, sketched or photography he had a uniqueness that was brought to life through his vision. He was gifted to create art in many different practices, a style to call his own, a creation to share, a story not in words but in art.

We want to extend our thanks to Graham’s family for sharing his artwork with us in this way. Mähsį cho!
