Another Successful YFGA Youth Outdoor Education Camp! 🏕️

From July 1–5, twelve young Yukoners spent five unforgettable days at Lapie Lakes learning fly fishing, archery, firearm safety, trapping, canoeing, wilderness survival skills, hide tanning, campcraft, and much more.

This year, we received an unprecedented number of applications from youth across the Yukon—a testament to the growing interest in outdoor education and the importance of programs like this. While we could only accommodate twelve campers, it's inspiring to see so many young Yukoners eager to get outside, learn new skills, and develop a deeper appreciation for Yukon wildlife and conservation.

A huge thank you to our outstanding chaperones and instructors—Richard Cherepak, Tracy Bowers, Kathryn Grimmett, and Dustin Doerntlein—for making this camp such a success. We'd also like to thank Aaron Florian, and Greg and Lorna Spenner of Yukon Stone Outfitters, for their incredible hospitality, outstanding meals, and the countless hours they dedicated to teaching and mentoring our campers throughout the week.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their time, knowledge, and support to make this year's camp possible.

We can't wait to do it all again next year! 🌲🐟

What an incredible day at the 2026 Wolf Creek Fry Release!

On Sunday, hundreds of Yukoners came together to take part in one of our favourite annual traditions - helping release chinook salmon fry into Wolf Creek and doing our small part to support the future of chinook salmon.

To every family, child, volunteer, partner, and community member who came out to take part in salmon conservation - thank you.

A heartfelt thank you to Ta’an Kwäch’än Council Elder Rose Irvine (joined by Elders Patty Boss and Bengie Clethero) for providing such a meaningful and inspiring opening ceremony and prayer before the fry release.

Thank you to Warren and Stephanie at the Whitehorse Hatchery for raising the Chinook salmon fry, transporting them to the event, and taking the time to provide an engaging and educational opening talk for the kids before the release. Your work behind the scenes makes this event possible, and we’re incredibly grateful for everything you do to support Yukon salmon conservation.

This event would not be possible without the incredible support of our partners:

🐟 Whitehorse Hatchery
🐟 Kwanlin Dün First Nation
🐟 Ta'an Kwäch'än Council
🐟 Carcross/Tagish First Nation
🐟 EDI Environmental Dynamics Inc.
🐟 Yukon Energy
🐟 Whitehorse Fish Ladder
🐟 Fisheries and Oceans Canada

A very special thank you to Canadian Tire Whitehorse for generously donating a brand-new BBQ that will help support YFGA community events for years to come, and to Super A Foods (Porter Creek) for donating the hamburgers and hamburger buns that helped keep everybody fed throughout the day.

We also want to extend a huge thank you to Last Run Films and the National Film Board for being on site to document the event as part of their upcoming documentary, The Last Run: Saving Our Salmon. We’re honoured that this important Yukon conservation story is being shared with a broader audience.

Salmon conservation must be a collaborative effort - it takes all of us.

Thank you for joining us, supporting this event, and for helping inspire the next generation of Yukoners ❤️🐟❤️
